I will be in Sydney soon for business, on a fairly tight schedule. I'd love to take an excursion to Cairns and dive the GBR, but only have a couple of days for it. I see that a couple of operators offer one-night trips out of Cairns--can anyone recommend one of these? Especially for a 50ish man traveling alone?

Hi Joe,

The only 2 operators that offer 2 day 1 night are Ocean Quest and Kangaroo Explorer. These boats stay on the Reef and have daily transfer vessels going out.

Kangaroo is a more budget option but both have great sites. Ocean Quest is probably a bit more up your alley with a slightly older custimer base and doesnt have quite so many back packers on it. But dont let that put you off as both are very professional.

Check out the info here and let me know if you have any specific questions (via PM).

I did a liveaboard with OceanQuest in mid-2009. It was 3-day trip and we went to some amazing sites. The staff was amazing, very porfessional, friendly and fun. Rooms were nice and food was pretty decent. There was a mixed crowd on board, several older couples (40-50s), some divers completing their OW and AOW, and a mixed group of us doing fun dives. Of the fun divers we had various levels of experience so it was easy to find a buddy of comparable skills. Very highly reccomended dive operator!

We have just come back from a 2 day trip on Kangaaroo explorer check out our blog of the trip - cairnsdiveadventures.com/2010/12/cairns-dive-centre-december-liveaboard-diving-review/

I would not hesitate to recommend this trip. not to many backpackers.

if it does get too hard, then there is some great diving in sydney as well :D

it is temperate diving though... not coral reefs
