Search for missing diver off Sutherland suspended
The search for a diver reported missing off the Sutherland coast has been suspended.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said the alarm was raised at about 11:00 on Thursday.

The diver was part of a group on a dive vessel near Kinlochbervie but failed to resurface.

Police Scotland said a multi-agency search was carried out, involving Coastguard rescue teams, a helicopter and the RNLI.

The MCA said Kinlochbervie and Melness coastguard rescue teams, Lochinver RNLI lifeboat and the search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway were sent to the scene.

A spokeswoman earlier said: "A mayday call has been put out to any nearby vessels to request their assistance in a search.

"The coastguard emergency tow vessel, Ievoli Black, has also joined the search effort further offshore."

The search follows the death of diver David Pleace, 57, from Derby, after he was reported missing in Scapa Flow in Orkney on Sunday.

This is mixing up two missing divers at a similar time in different parts of Scotland.

Diver 1, as per the title, missing in Sutherland
Diver 2, David Pleace, missing in Scapa Flow

I guess the BBC reporter mentioned both as they happened at a similar time.

Not much info in that article.
Yet it points out that the experienced diver overlooked hooking up an air hose.

I didn't see where it mentioned what hose was not hooked up.

Yikes!!

I forgot to hook up my power inflator hose one time on a pool dive. When I did my checkover for the second time I realized it!!

I was like ****! That could be bad! I now do triple and quadruple checks and MAKE SURE to not skip having someone else check my setup after Im done.

Im praying that one little mistake never leaves my mind and I always cover all the bases.

A diving expert who inspected Mr Pleace's equipment previously told the inquest that part of it had become disconnected prior to him entering the water.
Ms Lomas said: "The reality is because the hose was not connected, from the moment David entered the water, sadly the outcome was set."
She added it was "not entirely clear" what checks Mr Pleace personally took, but that fewer checks took place on the dive because experienced divers tend to do fewer team checks.

'Significant impact'

The coroner said: "On the evidence, such checks had not been carried out to an appropriate level.
"Had those checks happened, the wing inflator hose could have been noticed and corrected prior to Mr Pleace's entry to the water.
"I would like to highlight to all of the diving community that these checks are very important and that carrying out personal and body checks regardless of your level of expertise can have a significant impact in terms of what then follows."

Can you not manually inflate a wing BCD?

Can you not manually inflate a wing BCD?

Yes. But its a weird feeling to have such a brain lapse when diving and having the nagging thought of “what else did I miss”.
