Scuba diver dies off Palermo - English
(ANSA) - Palermo, August 28 - A scuba diver died off Palermo Wednesday and another one was missing.
The two men dived into the sea off Isola delle Femmine, on Palermo's western coast.
Fire brigade divers are taking part in the search.
The dead man's body has been recovered by a harbour master vessel and taken to the local marina.
The two divers were fishing, police said.
Both were form Palermo, they said.
Coast guard boats are also looking for the missing man.

Spearfishing in Italy is freediving.

Bob
The headline and story both said Scuba, but mistakes happen, especially in translations.

Just for situation awareness sub (the term used in the articles) is short for subacqueo somebody who goes underwater no matter how.
Also in an another article it is mentioned that no tools for fishing were found and the depth in the area is 80 mt with a wreck.
A Isola delle Femmine muore un sub, un altro è disperso - TGR Sicilia
It is unclear if they were free diving or scuba diving but no new data has been published and all news look like just the ANSA (national news agancy) re-packaged.

Considering the depth I would think it is scuba diving but just yesterday I have been asked to go down to 60 mt and film some free diver going down to a wreck. I politely declined it is beyond my acceptable level of risk (not my dive but the activity I would be part of which might project some liability on me in case the free diver has some issue). So I would not discard free diving on an 80 mt wreck for some activity nor a mixed team scuba and free diving (otherwise why 2 free divers would dive together?).

Ok name of deceased have been released:
Palermo, un sub morto e un disperso durante immersione. Esploravano un relitto a Isola delle Femmine
Also the dynamic of the accident is now a bit clearer:
2 Scubadivers went to explore a wreck in 70 mt of depth.
1 remains entangled
The other one goes straight to the surface to summon help (pretty much injuring himself beyond any rescue)

So the dead one is the one who came back to surface, the missing one (also dead) is the one entangled in 70 meter of depth.

No indication of dive plan nor kit configuration.
Probably people diving beyond their training.

Feeling sorry for the outcome.

Yes, pretty sad situation. Thank you for the updates. Do any of the articles mention the name of that wreck?

The name of the wreck is Loreto.
Also in one of the video the interviewed person mention four cylinders each diver, son looks like tech config.

So they weren't spearfishing? Or they were, illegally?

No spearfishing the source mentioning it retracted and apologised.
