An excellent small bright LED is the Barbolight. And it bypasses the expensive battery issue by using a li-ion rechargeable. I use the U-04 in the link below. It is a 3W Led but includes a li-ion rechargable, charger, and holster. The single battery it uses is the size of two CR123 batteries used by these other lights. It gets a 2.5 hour burn time. For me it is now my primary (as bright as an 8C UK eLED) but it would make the ultimate backup light as well. I'm not affiliated with Barbolight but it is the coolest dive light I've ever seen and is rock solid. Unfortunately for non-spanish speakers the site is in spanish but you can see some pics. It is not cheap, but for me it was worth it.
