Hi all,
I searched the board already but didn't find exactly what I was looking for -- hope this isn't a repeat.

I'm planning on buying an OMS IQ for use with singles now and doubles later. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible, so I'd like to avoid the STA for the time being. I tried on an IQ is a LDS a few weeks ago and it seemed like there were only two holes in the back of the backpack (to which one attaches the STA). Then, I saw a post on here that the NEW IQ has slots for cam bands. I e-mailed OMS and got a pretty cryptic response -- they said that the "standard IQ" (didn't know there was an upgrade!) comes with slots for cam bands. They also said that the "plastic backplate that's included with the IQ doesn't have slots" but the "optional plate does include slots." Is there a plastic BP included?

I went to a different LDS today and looked at an IQ again. This time, I noticed that there are loops in the nylon webbing in the back of the IQ (which appear to be for cam bands), but no slots. In other words, it looks like you can thread cam bands through the outer nylon of the IQ, but it doesn't look like the cam bands ever ENTER the IQ. So I'm confused -- how could cam bands ever thread through the AL/SS plate if they never enter the IQ?

Is it possible that I wasn't looking at the brand new version of the IQ? Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks in advance. Can't wait til I know enough to post a helpful post on this board! For now, I'm just mooching info from the rest of you! Thanks.

Just got another response from OMS:

"no plate is provided with the IQ. If the dealer orders and IQ with an aluminum backplate he does not receive
the model with the slots. Backplates with slots are optional. "

Does mean that you need to be diving a harness/bp setup to ever use the slots in the backplate? Still confused...

This is not an answer for you but that I am looking at the IQ as well and have the same questions. I would also like to use it for now as a single tank rig but certainly want the flexability to go to doubles when the time comes.

look at this page from oms, it says the new IQ pacs have a single cylinder cam band system integrated in the harness with out a plate.

when you buy it make sure you get a "new" IQ pac from the dealer, cause the IQ has gone through about 4 serious changes/phases of development. 1)the older ones had the non-removable no sag pockets, 2)then they came standard but removeable, 3)then came the no pockets-but still with the fastex buckle waist strap, 4)and the new IQ doesn't have them at all but comes with a better waist strap with a regular harness buckle.

Thanks for the Advice. Just odered my IQ + 45 wing + AL BP. Can't wait...

Hope this helps..

I bought the new IQ pack from LP and although it comes with the loops for the tank cam bands it does not include the tank cams. I placed a second order for 2 tank cams per IQ pack. OMS has them but I went for the generic kind.

For the installation:

I affixed the wing to the IQ using ¼ “ plastic cable ties
Note: I followed the information in another thread. (Sorry do not remember which one, but many thanks to the poster)

Then I inserted the cams through the loops.

One thing to know, the cam bands do not come looped through the buckle. This can be challenging, so if you have not done this you might require assistance from another diver or an internet search. (I found a nice illustration and info on a USD online manual.)

I will be trying this setup this weekend at Dutch Springs. I’ll post my experience.

VFA:
Do you remember how much you paid for the cam bands?

Also, why plastic cable ties? Are you using a back plate? I ordered an AL backplate, so I was planning on bolting the plate to the wing as well. Does this make sense?

Hoping to try my new gear in two weeks at Dutch Springs. Maybe I'll bump into you...

PS: I got an amazing deal on the IQ from what seems to be a LDS with a website. IQ + 45# + BP for $360. Actaully beat Leisure pro's price (which was w/o the BP).

Cam bands $15.00 walk in price @ LP
Finding out you got such a sweet deal... priceless.

During a conversation with OMS tech support they said for single was OK with no BP. If you are going doubles then the BP is needed.

The ty-wraps keep the wing in place, it seemed a bit loose to me and got me worried, but after fastening the tank it is very sturdy, well in my living room anyways, weekend test will have the last word.

By the way the tech also told me that the warning label on the wing should face the IQ pack.

This is my first time with a back inflated setup. I'm very excited and thankful to all the cyber-divers who share their experiences and thoughts on this board.

BTW care to send me the link to that internet vendor?

As far a Dutch Springs in two weeks... Damn now you got me fired up again. Do not think the wife will smile about that one.

cheers

:) :)
