I called them yesterday and told them I was getting some dark pictures, and problems with the unit resetting when removing the batteries, they didn't ask for a s/n and emailed me the return info & case number.

Good news (at last :)) Olympus America have informed me that my serial # 24212 is NOT affected by the CCD recall. Now I can enjoy my holiday in Sipadan without stressing that the camera will fail.

I should hear tomorrow or the next day if my baby made it safe to the doctor. Right now I have the fiber optic cable, strobe arm, and housing - no strobe or camera to use with them.

I'm going through withdrawal.
:bawling:  :hyper: :eyecrazy: :crying:

Dee:
They are going to reimburse me for the repair I just had done, second repair/replacement on the CCD, BTW..... and I'll be sending the other one in when I get back.
Dee, did Olympus say WHEN they would be reimbursing you? I just had my camera fixed last month, and when I wrote to Oly to ask about reimbursement, they said they will be looking at all of their previous repairs, and contacting the affected customers in November. Just wondering if I should contest the CC charge now, or wait for the process to run through.

thanks.

G'day Mel.B
I purchased my camera from the USA, I sent Olympus an email last night with the serial No, they responded and told me that my camera was one that could be effected but if I was not having a problem with it right now to hold of until January 2006.

Check out this link http://www.moon-stone.com/5050/progress.htm
there is reference to serial Numbers that are effected.

Cheryl, sorry for the delay, I've been on a trip for 2 weeks.

I called Olympus again yesterday, twice in fact to see if everyone's story was from the same page! I was told that all the recent repairs for this problem over the last few months were being reviewed the month of November. Starting Dec. 1 they would be notifying folks via snail mail about their refunds and how to collect them. I also checked the serial number on my backup 5050 and luckily it's not on the list. They also said if you have a camera that is affected to please wait until January to send it in for the free repair as they are extremely busy.

I thought my camera was dead , but after seeing this thread, I called Olympus to see if my camera serial number happened to be in the recall. A bit of a strange pause by the folks there, but eventually I was told no it was not with in the identified set. Oh well, I decided to sent the camera in for repair anyway (~Nov 8). I checked this morning on the status and was told its on hold awaiting a part, but that I should have it in a few weeks (2cd wk in Dec). But the best part is they are covering it under the advisory. So for those of you who were told no, there may be hope yet.

Dee:
I found this advisory from Olympus posted on another board. Have you had this problem?

"In picture taking mode, the camera will produce pictures that are of a gray or
purple tone or the pictures will be completely black. If the LCD monitor (or
the C-730UZ electronic viewfinder) is used to compose the picture, the
preview display will also be dark."

I recently sent one of my 5050's in for just this type of repair. Hopefully I can get a refund.
Thanks for posting this. I just saw it (I was off the boards for a few weeks) and called Oly. My 5050 is covered!! So even though I have had no problems so far, I will get a full refurbishment and new CCD for free!
