I found this advisory from Olympus posted on another board. Have you had this problem?

"In picture taking mode, the camera will produce pictures that are of a gray or
purple tone or the pictures will be completely black. If the LCD monitor (or
the C-730UZ electronic viewfinder) is used to compose the picture, the
preview display will also be dark."

I recently sent one of my 5050's in for just this type of repair. Hopefully I can get a refund.

Yup, my camera died TODAY with the same problems.
An hour later I got a note from an old friend who knew I had the C5050
and she pointed me at this site .... same info ...

I'm hoping they can be very quick on turnaround as I was hoping to have the camera for a spring trip in about a week!

Can U say EEEEK????

Guess who's camera falls in the recall list - yep, your's truly. I guess I need to send it off while I wait for the strobe to be replaced (leisurepro is on a week of holiday) and the fiber optic cable to go around the world to get here from Canada :D. Between this and all the hurricanes this year, I'll be lucky to get 4 or 5 new salt water pictures taken.

On a good note, they say that the couple blue pixels I have may be part of this problem and to include them in my write-up. I guess after a year and a half it's time for a retread :D.

Is there a list of serial numbers published somewhere of the camera affected? My 5050 is with Oly Australia atm being repaired for a lens malfunction and I rang them to ask about the CCD failure, thinking they could fix it before it happened while they had the camera there. I don't think the guy I spoke to knew what I was talking about. When i asked him if my serial # was affected he just said 'is it on the sheet?' (i think he means repair sheet of what needs to be done to the camera) and then said no.
I'm off on holidays in a couple of weeks and would hate for it to fail while away.

Thanks,
mel

If you go to the link that SFLDiver posted, it will have an 888 number to call. They asked for my serial number off the camera bottom and then they looked it up. I don't think there's a public list anywhere.

Yoda's right, there's no list published. You have to call Olympus and give them your serial number.

They are going to reimburse me for the repair I just had done, second repair/replacement on the CCD, BTW..... and I'll be sending the other one in when I get back.

Thanks, but i'm in Australia, so that number is no good to me. I spoke to them on Wed and they didn't seem to know anything about it. The guy I spoke to certainly didn't look up any serial numbers, he just told me 'no'.

Well I'm one very UNHAPPY Olympus customer at the moment. I just contacted Olympus Australia again and they do no have a list of serial numbers affected and will not be repairing any cameras unless they are actually faulty. He even had the nerve to tell me that they couldn't fix it if it wasn't broken! He didn't seem to understand that all they had to do was replace the CCD.
I'm going to be emailing Olympus America to see if I can find out more.

mel

It may just be a US thing. I know Olympus AU and Olympus Japan is seperate, and usually have different models.

Hopefully you'll find out something useful.

I've seen a Europen advisory for the same problem and they guy knew what I was talking about too. Also I got my camera from America, so someone somewhere should be able to tell me about it!
