Laying beside a feeding station on the GBReef for 20 mins as the sun goes down whilst whale songs are running through your whole body and all the others have left the water.

Nothing beats diving with a good friend and trusted buddy. By the same token everything beats diving with a dangerously inexperienced buddy - the kind you can get stuck with on dive boats. As in, when they look around for an experienced diver to buddy-up with a recent open water barely-graduate whose own buddy bailed because they were terrified to dive with them? Soloing gives you an option out of that situation. In fact, I may start carrying a camera on boats as further insurance...

LOL... Fortunately, I still look like a moron on the boat, so they stay clear of me. But I rarely use my Instructor card when I'm signing up for the same reason~

Not having to worry about my unknown/just paired up with on the dive boat buddy's level of experience. I'm tired of diving with someone who supposedly has Rescue/Master/ etc certification. Only to find out after they pull some dumb ass maneuver and we get out of the water, that they have never been in cold water or kelp or it's been 18 months since their last dive etc, etc..

I've had too many, Know it all, don't tell me how to do a pre dive check or yeah, yeah let's just go dive buddies. Not to mention the one's that just swim off as if they were Solo diving barely looking over their shoulder every 5 to 10 minutes to see if I'm still in the same ocean as they are.

I love great dive buddies, unfortunately, they are hard to come by.

My wife and I are photographers, so we usually use the Same Ocean Buddy system. But, when the water gets 'cold,' (read below 80F) she stays on the beach. So, I go solo and have zen moments. If I want to watch a nudi race or stare down a scorpion fish, the only thing I have to worry about is the gas on my back.
