We were at Natural Springs last Sunday and the vis was 8 feet in the morning and 4 feet by afternoon. Luckily the Discover Scuba students were so jazzed up about getting some practice before going to Jamaica for a Discover Scuba it didn't matter if they could see LOL! The best time to dive Natural Springs is in late April/early May before the weeds grow or in the late fall/early winter after they die. We had amazing visibility there the first weekend of December a couple years ago. Nice thing about the quarry is it warms up faster than the rest because it's so shallow. I'm the freeze queen and was in a 2mm full suit with a 3mm shortie over it (no hood or gloves) and stayed pretty comfortable but we were only at 17 feet max.

My favorite is Gilboa, the visibility is always better than Natural Springs. Second favorite in Ohio is White Star. I don't particularly care for Portage because I've never seen good visibility there but I do like diving the silo. To be fair I had a horrible experience at Portage on my check-out dives 14 years ago and I don't think I've ever completely gotten over being spooked there.

Last I dove Natural Springs I had a 3mm shortie. We stayed above the thermalcline and made two dives over an hour each. I heard someone say they had 80F last weekend, and I had upper 70's in early July. The instructor who reported 80F reported 5 feet of vis, which he said was an improvement. :D Get there at 8AM and you can get a dive (two if they're short) before the OW classes stir it up.

Max depth will be 30 feet, which you might get as you swim into the bottom and burry the gauge. :D Very few attractions. I see it as a good place to experience low vis conditions. Navigating away from the rope lines can feel like you're in blue water (no surface or bottom reference).

Entry cost was $17 on my last visit, and includes one air fill. They have restrooms and hot showers. They also have burgers, dogs, nachos and other ballpark-like food. There is also a small store in the office.

I just did two dives at Natural Springs on tuesday 7/24 this vis was pretty bad about 6 feet. We did two dives and hit about everything in there except two of the boats. We were both wearing 7mm FJ wetsuits so we dipped down below the thermal as much as we could, which was around 66 degrees. All in all it was not bad, something new :)
Here are some pics that Marty took:

Haven't done Natural Springs yet...honestly, I haven't heard too much about it, comparatively speaking.

That said, though, my SO and I live in Lima, which is more towards the Gilboa/Portage/White Star region. I've dove all of them numerous times, and I'd still have to say that Gilboa's my fave (although it's best to get there early when the vis is still decent). Portage is my second-fave, though, partly because that's where I was trained at. :)

Speaking of which, my SO and I are going to be doing the first part of our AOW on August 4th at Portage...hope to see some of you Ohio guys and gals out there!

Good luck, Joe, and enjoy!!
