I was wondering, as I really have no clue about the great lakes, if there is any shore diving within 2 hours of Cleveland Ohio.

If there is, what are the temps this time of year?

We might be taking a trip up there in a few weeks and want to see if it's even possible...

Thanks in advance !

Quarry diving or shore diving the Great Lakes?

White Star Quarry is about 2 hours from Cleveland but you would need to check their hours of operation. I'm not sure when they close for the season.

Gilboa Quarry is farther away but worth the drive (2:30 hours or so depending on where in Cleveland). Water temp there last weekend was 68 degrees to 30 feet and 50 degrees at 60 feet. The quarry cools fairly slowly, I'm going to have students there Nov 17-18 and am hoping for water in the 55+ degree range...that's a reasonable expectation.

Can't help with shore dives on the lakes, never done one. Discovery Dive Charters in Cleveland may be able to give advice.

There is also a West Erie book also. Avon has several wrecks that you can dive from the shore. Just be sure and to bring a dive flag and stay away from the grates to the power plants intake tubes. If you are okay with cold water diving, Nov, Dec are good times since the boat traffic is less.

I just received a flyer that said that White Star is open now during the winter months.

I don't know why one couldn't do shore diving, but the wrecks I know about are far enough out that you wouldn't want to swim to them.

There are a few beaches that I'd like to swim out from just to see what's there. I don't always need a shipwreck to entertain me. It could be interesting to see what's on the lake bottom. Then again, I can have fun diving in a quarry just because I like being in the water.

I'd recomend checking regulations and to take a dive float with you.

I thought I heard through the grapevine they were doing something different...evidently I'm not special enough to qualify for a flyer :D (My husband thinks I'm special...I haven't figured out why he rolls his eyes while saying "She's SPECIAL all right" :rofl3: )

Randy: I did two wrecks from the shore of Avon lake about 5 years ago. I now have a boat and I can now go a little farther out to check out Lake Eries wrecks. In all honesty, IMHO there isnt much else to look at in Lake Erie other than the wrecks. I have three books on Lake Erie ship wrecks. Long/Lat, if they are bouyed, all about the ship before the sinkings, what the ship looks like now and hazards invovled, skill level recommended. I can let ya know the wrecks name after I get home from work today if you would like. You can get a fine for diving without a dive flag in Lake Erie and the boating traffic around Avon Lake is heavy at times. The boating activities are the biggest hazards if you ask me with only 15-40 feet of depth.

No.....I AM NOT SPECIAL!!!!..Just ask my wife:D

I never even dove the White Star quarry yet. I called eairler this year asking about Ice diving there and the person told me that they had something in the works for next year and asked for my addy. Wah-lah, I get a flyer.... I am going to try it out this winter though. I hear that they have air also. Not sure if that will be available for the month of Feb. I hate man handling a dozen 80 AL's. Pray for a cold winter.
