I just thought I'd pass these items along concerning the GOM...
Former training ship Texas Clipper will be sunk in 134 feet of water 17 miles off the coast of Texas. This week, it was towed from the Beaumont Reserve Fleet to Brownsville for cleaning before being sunk. No date was given for the event.
Dr. Robert Ballard (of Titanic exploration fame, among others...) will head an expedition to the Flower Garden Banks and Gulf of Mexico scheduled to leave Galveston in March 2007. The purpose of the expedition is to map the area and specifically look for ancient archaeological sites in the along what was once the shoreline of the Americas. (The site was much closer to the surface--in fact on it--thousands of years ago when the ocean level was lower.) The group will use diving, submersibles, and sonar to explore the area and will broadcast live to schools and other organizations worldwide.
Pretty neat, huh?
And this weekend I'll be attending the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST) in Wichita Falls, Texas. I'll be presenting workshops on the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary using--of course--photos and video I've shot there over the last few years. Hey, if I can't dive I might as well be TALKING about diving, and 4000 science teachers usually make a pretty good audience. Should be fun!
