My choice for a traditional Octo is the Viper... it doesn't matter which end is "up".

My logic was that my students would likely be using rental gear that had an octo that needed to be oriented correctly in addition to my Atomic SS1.

NetDoc:
You should use whatever your students are being taught to use. When I was enamored with my AirIIs I did only one DM stint with them. I had a substandard rebuild of my Micra catch me unawares and I had to use my air2 to finish the dive. It would have been very awkward to buddy breathe with at best. For a while after that, I had an octo in addition to my AirII... until I really got serious about being neutral and figured out that the AirII put way too much air in when you hit the button. So now you can find my AirIIs in the SB marketplace. :D
Put too much air in? It's a standard balanced inflator mechanism. How did it do that?

The original question:
Use whatever the students are being taught in. If they are being taught with traditional backup regs use a traditional backup reg. If they are using AIR II's use an AIR II. Some instructors have them use both (I am one of them) so that they can get a feel for what they like and dislike.

I am a bit of a stickler for buying good stuff. It breaks the bank in the beginning but I think its worth it. I have my eye on the TX50 from Apeks, no reason why, but my ATX200 is really smooth so I assume it will be of comparrable quality.
I think you'll find the TX50 works just fine as either a primary or alternate regulator. They're functional and robust. I have several ATX 100's and several TX 50's and telling the difference between them usually requires a look at the faceplate. You're 100% right about buying quality - don't skimp on your alternate regulator, it's the one you're going to need to keep you alive when the SHTF.

Actually, one of the features is how much quicker it will inflate a BC. Almost half the time needed by a normal inflator. The Hose supposedly has a much bigger ID allowing a higher flow rate. Of course, that's straight from the LDS that sold it to me, so who knows it veracity.

I have the ATX50/DS4 and I also wanted to keep my backup (octo) Apeks. Even in cold water (BC water) my AT20 does perfectly fine (never freezes). So that's a good choice IMO...breathes pretty good for a backup too, and not too expensive.

for freeflowing after 50 dives or so.....I have 2, use one and the other has about 5 dives on it sitting in a box. I like my Atomic SS1, but as Pete rightly points out, buddy breathing with any of those would be a bit of a challenge.

I've never heard of the "notorious free flow after 50 dives" on AIR 2's before, and I thought I kept up with these posts. Mine's never had that problem, certainly.

I have to agree that as a DM you're really gonna need that octo, even if you have an alternate inflator reg hooked up. The alternative is to either have your entire class trained using alternate inflator regs, or have them trained on both standard octo's AND alternate inflator regs. Ugh. The class will certainly feel annoyed that you have one less hose than they do, and wonder why THEY don't get that luxury. Er... that last statement was purely hypothetical... sortof. dang where's the winking smiley face icon?!

Huh that's a new one to me. Could be true and I've never really noticed it.

A few of you mention sharing air and the difficulty involving the AIR II. Do you teach pass the primary or pass the "octo?"

Are there any other equipment issues I should be aware of before my DM course?

Ed.

I know of a dive shop that rents BCs on their boat with air II. The BC will do up to 4 dives a day and they seem to be happy with them.. no "notorious" leaking every 50 dives.
