I am a very petite female and I have no issues diving with my AL 19 cf pony. My primary tank is only an AL 63 cf, and my SAC is very good, but I would not want to carry less than a 19 cf in a situation that I feel is at higher risk for a freeflow (very cold water and deep dives). I find the pony no problem under the water at all. The rig together, however, is too heavy for me to carry above ground, and I carry them separately. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can do it.

A slung pony is better for balance, being able to hand it off to someone in need, and being able to turn it on or off u/w. Steel D-rings are preferred to sling it on, but I have friends that use one with plastic D-rings without issue.

However, a back-mounted pony is just fine, but it should preferably have the SPG on a long hose so you can see it. The pony reg is often on a necklace for easy access.
