Maybe some Zen Divers can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard (and seen) that that's generally how it's done here in Japan. All my diving with J-shops when renting gear had a left-side Octo. Why? Well, because that's how it was orginally taught here, I'll assume.

again, my instructors and I have general arguments about this. If you route the octo from the traditional right hand side, when you donate the octo, the receiver must remember to rotate the octo around or it goes in upside down.
If you route it from the left there may be a chance that the BC inflator hose interferes with deployment.

Therefore it becomes a personal choice.

As far as I am aware there is no PADI standard that states octo must come from right, it has always been a convention rather than a standard to route from the right.

Tend to wear mine necklaced from the left and found it fine to donate. The only "issues" i had on the idc were when i was told to donate upside down i had to physically rotate it and then the "instructor" could see immediately what the problem was.
I was the only one with a left mounted octo in our group though (that said all usually used long hose and just borrowed normal regs for the course).
bsac generally favours left side but again its not a standard. I just prefer left for donation purposes.

Perhaps the tendency to route the octo on the right nowadays stems from a sense of balance.

Two hoses to the right, primary and alternate, and two hoses to the left, b/c inflator and SPG.

Just speculating . . .

Never thought of that

At this point I am highly considering trying out the octo to the left set-up. The only problem that I can think of now would be with it and my computer hose.

At least this will give me a excuse to drag out my give gear and play with it tonight after work :D

You need an excuse?

My YMCA OW class had octo on left back in early 90's in Texas. I like having air available with either hand. When I purchased my first regulator setup both were routed to right hand side. Eventually I had primary knocked out of my mouth when my right arm was temporarily trapped and left arm was free; sure would have liked to put secondary in my mouth rather than waiting for right arm to be available to get air.

Some second stages like the SP 190 can have internals turned around to be mounted from the left side.

I run my oceanic omega backup on the necklace, under the left arm, and the primary on the long hose from the right, works great, and since the second stage on the necklace isn't going anywhere but in my mouth, I dont have a problem with a slung bottle on the left.
