I am trying to decide between two octos; the Oceanic Swivel 180 and the Dacor Viper. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I have used a Viper on occasion. It is low profile and performs well enough. (The side exhaust designs are nice in that they are reversible and can be used from either direction.) However it is not exactly the easiest breathing second stage I have ever used and while I liked the purge cover on mine, others I have seen use a positively cheap and cheesy looking purge button/cover.

Is it the Oceanic the same mechanism as the Slimline? If so, beware... the slimline was the worst breathing octo I have ever tried-- super wet and hard to breathe, not what you need in a sharing situation. This swivel may be totally different though.

Dive Right In Scuba:
Make sure you will be able to get parts for the Dacor, they are hard to come by since they are out of business

Is Mares shutting down Dacor totally?

DACOR is not out of business ....... Mares just doesn't want to promote the line and it has become their "low end" equipment . Many shops have dropped the Dacor line and finding parts and service can be a problem ..... that's why I used the Dacor/Mares trade in program last year to get two new Mares Abyss regulators.

If no one sells it, no one promotes it, and finding parts and getting service is a problem......like I said, that means they are pretty much out of business:D Mares actually even sold alot of the Dacor Technology off to other companies ex. fins
Which is why they offered the trade in program. Anyline that I carry also offers a trade in option for Dacor.

As for being Mares low end equipment, it doesnt carry the Dacor name anymore....Dacor is gone...whatever you want to call it:( I wish it wasnt sooooo....

Dacor is not out of business. We still sell alot of Dacor equipment, with the Dacor name on it. The Dacor Viper Octo being discussed is a very good selling model for us, we also make the exact same item with the Mares name on it, both sell well. We have not sold any Dacor technology "off to another company". We are one of the few companies that have their own factories, we also produce for other companies.

I heard you sold some of the Dacor Technology to Sherwood for use on theirfins? Maybe Im mistaken and Dacor sold it before they sold the company, trying to get recoup some more money ???

So then why is it nearly impossible to get Dacor replacement parts??

Mike, I'm surprised to see you take this tack.

The comment from you "Make sure you will be able to get parts for the Dacor, they are hard to come by since they are out of business" is terrible coming from someone that should know better.

Getting service parts for a Viper octo has never been an issue, it uses the same parts as Mares second stages for service. Yes, in the past Mares has had trouble with demand for parts, most often HP seats, the problem was made worse when dealers bought hundreds when they did come in stock so they wouldn't have to wait again, making everybody else wait...

In fact the Viper Octo was recently put into the Mares line as well because it is a good solid unit.

Dacor parts for Dacor regs that were made by Dacor before HTM (Mares sorta) are no longer made, this hasn't been a secret and Mares/Dacor has bent over backwards to do right by this. They bought the name and old stock, not the factory.

Mares (now Mares/Dacor) has been making fins for Sherwood for ages(look at the Genesis Aquaflex, it's an old style Mares Avanti). Two years ago they stopped distributing a fin that was sold by Dacor and began to make the same fin for Sherwood.

I'm not sure of your agenda here but how about limiting the misleading and downright false statements.
