Hi there,

My Oceanic Veo 100 always seems to be on even though the contacts are not wet. The booklet says that it should automatically turn off after 2 hours, but it doesn't seem to do this. Any advice?

Thanks!
Lori

You need to wash the computer. On water activated models, sometimes debris (salt, etc) can connect the contacts electrically. Try washing the thing with warm (not hot) water and letting it dry.

Hi Lori--

What Sharpenu said. But it's still puzzling...

Your computer never turns off (in which case you'd be burning through batteries), or does this happen sporadically?

According to the Veo 100 manual, the automatic switch-on is accomplished by completing a water-borne electrical circuit between the stem of the control button on the face, and the data port contacts on the side. I was wondering whether you had your computer in a console, and that was maybe keeping the circuit between those points wet. But I have mine in a console, and have never had that problem -- I've got a hole cut out of the side of the console to reveal the data port contacts; but the control button, in any case, is well clear of the console boot and dries quickly.

If Sharpenu's solution doesn't work (maybe with the computer module removed from any console or boot), I'd try to reset the computer (page 42 of the manual). And/or carefully remove and replace the battery, waiting long enough to make sure it resets. But otherwise, I'd say you may have a warranty issue...

Thanks Marek K and Sharpenu! It finally turned off, but I do burn through batteries. With only 10 dives in a year on it, I had to replace the battery. I'll contact the manufacturer about it.

Lori--

I think you'll find that Oceanic will give you a terse "contact your authorized dealer." If you didn't purchase the computer from an authorized dealer, Oceanic won't honor any warranty...

If you purchased from a dealer like LeisurePro (not an authorized dealer), you'll have to go through them. They offer their own warranty, but it may take a while.

If you bought it used, you may be out of luck...

I think a lot of folks (me included) would be interested in hearing how this works out.

Thorough rinsing after each dive is essential for proper operation of any water activated computer. I used to have trouble occasionally with my USD Monitor 2 making an electrical connection accross the 2 inch gap between the contacts and going into log mode and endlessly scrolling through the previous 9 dives, beeping at each dive. I learned that just a good rinse in clean, fresh water took care of the problem. It takes surprisingly little salt water drying on the unit to close the circuit and keep it activated.

Note that the oceanic computers pull a lot of juice on start up and different battery brands hand this surge better than others. One thing that sometimes happens is the battery indicator will indicate low on start up for a couple of seconds on a battery that does not supply enough surge current and trick you into replacing a functioning battery. Been there, done that.

Does this 2-hour power down rule apply to the Veo 2.0 aswell? I can't find any reference to powering down in the manual.
Yes, but it is not written anywhere on the published manual (it is written only on the internal engineering specs).
