I posted earlier and got some good advice.
My son and I are new, less than 20 dives, OW cert.
Diving will be warm water in NC, FL, Caribbean,
mainly. Hope to get AOW and Nitrox this summer.
This is what I put together for my son and I.

Oceanic GT3/CDX-5 (non DVT) Diaphragm Regulator
with Environmental seal.

Oceanic Slimline octo.

Genesis CG5736 200ft Compact Console

Total cost is $352 for each set.

We both have wrist dive computers already.

I haven't purchased this yet but I
probably will tomorrow unless somebody
scares me.

What do you think about the equipment ?

What do you think about the price ?

Thanks Again

I bought the same regulator and octo for my son and myself last fall. I went for the Veo 180 computer/compass console. I think I paid $370.

We like the regulators, we only have eight dives on them, but good so far.

I did a lot of research before the purchase like I am sure you did.

That sounds like a better deal. Even though we have wrist computers
for $20 more I would take your setup. Can I ask where you got it ?

Thanks

Mark,
The price is not bad. Personally, I would prefer the non-dvt version.
But, the Slimline octo (as is true of most pancake octos) is not a very good breather. I would substitute an Alpha 8 octo which is a conventional octo that has the same msrp as the Slimline.

It's a good regulator with or with out the DVT. I never had any issue with the three I have other then a frist stage being adjusted wrong at service. I would ask to have them tuned if your getting them from LDS. It makes a big difference!

IMHO one of the best things I did was get rid of that console. Get a wrist mount compass, computer and plain SPG. Navagation and depth control will be much better because everything is right there.

I agree with keyshunter, upgrade away from the slimline octo. Those breathe horribly. Spend $20 extra for a regular octo.

Used a GT3 / CDX-5 (DVT Version) for awhile I had the Air 2 integrated with it and was using a ATOM with wireless transmitter for gas monitoring. It was a great setup and loved having the smaller number of hoses.

That rig was changed out for a EOS, SlimLine W/ Mag clip, and standard set of Gauges.

So to answer your questions price is good yes. I would go for the DVT version of the CDX. Regarding everyones comments about the slimline not breathing well. Its an alternate go with the cheapest one you can get your hands on that is functional. Your not going to be breathing off it on a regular basis to start with and in all truth if you perfect your other skills and your buddies do the same its going to get next to no use anyways. If you want to to breath easier have your shop turn up the flow rate on it. When the slim line ships it is set to breath harder to avoid an accidental free flow while your diving. Stay away from the mag clip as I find it comes free unexpected on a fairly regular basis.

I would also go with a Oceanic set of gauges since the rest of the setup is Oceanic. This will ensure that you can have the entire rig serviced at a single location. Although most spots that service the oceanic line also service the Genesis line this is not always the case.

Thanks all for the replies and info.

I pulled the trigger yesterday on the GT3/CDX-5 (non DVT), Slimline
octo & Genesis gauges at $350 (incl setup and shipping).

I was a litttle concerned about the Slimline and DVT or non DVT
but if you read enough opinions you will get a
positive response and surely a negative one. It is good to hear both sides and
the arguments for and against.

It seems the 1st and 2nd stage are decent, the octo not so great
but serviceable, DVT or not is a toss up and gauges will work.

So I am satisfied and I don't have a huge investment in
what I'm sure won't be the last reg setup I ever buy.

Thanks All,

Mark
