I bought a package off ebay just for the dive computer/console that came with a CDX-5 with Delta 3 and Alpha 7 Octo. I was gonna pull off the computer to use on my Scuba Pro MK20 with G200B. Does anyone have any exprience or know anything about the CDX-5 with Delta 3??? Is it a better reg than my MK20?

I like the Delta 3 as my backup(octopuss) regulator for a couple of reasons. One, it is a nice breather, not great, but not bad. Second, my version has a flow control knob, so I can tighten it up and use it on a necklace and not worry about free flow problems. It works just fine in combination with Apeks ATX50 setup.

The CDX5 is mediocre and has trouble in some breathing conditions, eg. upside down, deep dives, other demanding situations.

Do you have any personal experience with troubles with the CDX5? I have 2 of them and they are very reliable.

Also the CDX5 is the same first stage used in the Aeris ION which was found to be one of the best overall breathers in the last reg review. I believe the second stage is an EOS.

Is there such an issue as any 1st stage reg not working while upside down? I mean I'm only an engineering student, not an actual engineer yet, but looking at the basic design of both piston and diaphram type regs (wikipedia) I don't see how gravity in any 360 degree position should really effect or impede their function. As they aren't gravity sustained or operated. Springs and gas pressure are the driving forces that operate them.

Is not gravity (at least not directly). Is the fact that upside down you may have the first stage at a higher or lower point of water depth than the mouthpiece which can conceivably affect breathing. The Double hose guys notice that far more than the single hose regs, since the double hose's 'second stage' is back with the first stage.

Second stages tend to breathe 'wet' upside down for a completely unrelated reason: Purge valve not at the bottom. I have never seen a reg which uses a double purge (like BC shoulder dumps sometimes have) to keep them more dry, so it must not be that big a problem.

Yea I understand that. Makes sense. Its funny, when we were doing pool trianing and the teacher was doing one by ones I would have a tendancy to sit and float on my back waiting my turn. The first stage would go underwater and I would notice it was alot easier to make my second stage free flow (when adjusted to maximum flow) as it is still above the water. This is not using the CDX-5 though, its my Scubapro Mk20 with G200B setup.

As for the first stage affecting things in different positions, it's B.S. The first stage simply regulates the pressure sent to the second stage. The first stage is in a stage of constant hydrostatic equilibrium, and will provide the same intermediate pressure to the second stage, regardless of it's position. Yes, it can be more difficult to breathe in some positions, but that is 100% the result of the second stage.

Personally I think keeping the Delta 3 is a great idea, but if you dont want it, I'm sure you can find several interested parties easily enough.

My experience has shown me my Delta3 breaths differently while inverted and under stress when connected the CDX5. The same is not true when the Delta 3 is connected to Apeks DST 1st stage. You can call BS, but my opinion is based on 2 years using this configuration.

The delta3 is my backup because it is a reliable and nicely built piece of equipment and easily serviced.

I certainly agree with one point in the above post, you should keep the gear. If you feel the gear is safe to use, try various combinations of 1st and 2nd stages and report back what you experienced. Use it for few weeks and than sell it back on ebay. Maybe you'll like the G200B connected to the CDX5.
