Have to give praise to the engineers at Oceanic for building one tough computer. My VEO 200 computer showed a low battery ind. and quit during a dive (checked before dive and was full) I took it out of the console and could see orange water inside the battery compartment, opened it up and it was full of corrosion, so much that you could tell that it must have leaked on my last dive a couple of months before. I was reluctant to try to clean it out as I thought that it must have had the crack in the battery comp. cover when I purchased it (was with console, no signs of "tank rollover" damage, and Oceanic has designed the console in such a way that you could not get this damage even if you did) I let it dry and guess what? It remembered all dives , profiles , etc. even packed full of corrosion , wow! how is that for "damage tolerant design" ?
Sent it in to Oceanic and they sent me a new one , all I had to pay was the shipping
Good deal , good computer , good company

You know, you're going to get the "if it was good, it shouldn't have flooded in the first place" posts.

Since I dive oceanics, I'm not going to say it. I'm quite happy with mine.

I had had nothing but good experiences with Oceanic products over the last 20 years until I bought a new Oceanic computer a couple of years ago. The battery compartment on my Oceanic Veo is crap. It flooded on the first dive. After changing the O ring and carefully putting it back together (which took the coordination of a magician) it continued to flood.

Since I bought it from Leisure Pro, there was no manufacturer's warranty. My son's new Oceanic flooded on the next dive, so we both now have to pay to have them fixed, but because of the battery compartment, I will probably just chunk them in the trash and chalk it up to experience. I know this, whoever designed that battery compartment was drunk or stupid or both. I'm betting both, and I will never buy anything from Oceanic again.

Sorry that your computers leaked and you have no recourse, that bites.
While I like good online prices , and use them for some things , there is something to be said about getting hightech/life support equip. from your LDS or at least someplace that has a full warr. in case something goes wrong

(the battery compartment cover had cracks in it so it was not a seal broblem)

Especially electronics and never, ever buy from a vendor that is not factory authorized. I wrote Oceanic a long letter, but they did not even respond. I was honest about buying from Leisure Pro, and as a result, Oceanic would not even talk to me, and I'm sure it's because I used LP. MY opinion of Oceanic has gone downhill rapidly as a result of this experience. I will never use LP again, but I am considering never using Oceanic either. Not only is their battery compartment crap, they won't even talk to me.

What's sad is that I have been a loyal Oceanic customer for well over 10 years. Not anymore.

Did you contact LP? They have their own warranty (which typically consists of sending you a new one, since they are not factory authorized.)

Why are you blaming Oceanic for something you and LP concocted? Oceanic clearly states that if the store is not an authorized centre then you are not covered. It seems that you are at fault here and not the manufacturer. Did you also blame the builder when you bumped your toe on your stairs?

IMO, that is what you get for buying from Leisure Pro, a store that is clearly not authorized and should not be selling the computers to begin with - heck they should not be selling 98% of the crap they have on their site.

We have had virtually no problems with the computers. Another reason you might have had a problem- keep in mind that a gray market source does not really get the best updated info on products. For example, the new Oceanic Delta 4 reg has only been available in gray market shops... that's because Oceanic had a problem with them. It was discovered within days of shipping them out, so they contacted all the legit dealers, (including us) and told us to not sell them... ship them back.

The dry technology thing in the first stage, which is pretty cool, had a little issue... and was making a chattering sound as it opened and closed. Not on all of them... and not necessarialy right away. It could develop. So they took them back, re-worked them, and the new ones will be shipping in about a week. Or the Atom computers had a leaking battery door problem. But again, Oceanic got them all back from the dealers and replaced them... But if a gray market dealer is sitting on a bunch he can't send back - he's just going to sell them.

So if you end up with that product, and it has a problem and you get stuck... that is simply why you got to save $15 when you bought it...

In life there is price... and there is value.

I tend to disagree with you. I think that if a manufacturer builds a product, they should stand by it. Period. They can easily check the serial number to see if it should be under warranty.

Your stubbing your tow example is silly. How about if the manufacture of the windows in your house had a problem where the glass just shatters. Your builder saved a dollar and purchased it from somewhere other than Lowes, but the window manufacturer says it is your problem... oh yea, the builder is out of business, so no relief there. It's clearly a manufacturing problem no matter where you purchased from (it's been proven that intallation had nothing to do with it). The window manufacturer clearly knows that it made the window and it has a defect, but won't stand by its product. That is criminal if you ask me. It's the product, not where you purchased it. I truly don't understand how a company can get away with not warranting a product that it clearly made.

I am lucky. I dive oceanic products and have had little problems with them. But there service truly does suck. I have been lied to by them, then had my questions ignored when I asked them about it.

You'll find more people around these parts complaining about oceanic as of late than you will praising them. And while it's typical that more people complain than praise, in this case, I find it very true.

All oceanic has to do is decide to have some customer service and respond to inquiries and they would rise back to the top. Not many people complain about the products, just the cruddy service they receive. It's truly sad.

Knowing what I know now, I will purchase from Larry and not LP. But not knowing that before, while ashame, should not leave me completely out of warranty. Why can't I send in my product and have it checked over by Oceanic for a small fee and get it under warranty. I'd gladly do that.

Thinking that something was concocted is a leap on your part. Some of us purchased out of a mistake and didn't know any better. If you weren't on this board for a while, you may not know that LP is not an auth'd dealer.

When u buy from a ligitamate authorized sourse, built in is the cost of an "insurance policy" which is your warranty.
When u get from these "grey market" sources, they get a cheaper price because it is a final sale, no returns, as is situation.
Often times as was pointed out the grey marketeers get merchandise that was not up to the manufacture's normal quality assurance and somehow escaped into the marketplace.

That being said: the issue of the battery compartment, I have noticed several computer companies (not jusst Oceanic) switched from the screw in cover for battery compartment to one where the cover is fitted over the compartment and the cover w/Oring is held down with a retainer ring. (personal experience is Aries Atmos 2 (Versa Pro), and Suunto Viper. These newer type of batt. compartment covers allow for a slimer profile, but are a PITA to close and be sure you have a good seal!
I dred when I have to change the batteries in those computers again.
