Ocean Sunfish in June?

OK. I am staying in Sanur, Amanda, is there a local Dive centre that you'd recommend that does day trips to the island?

There are many DC choices in Sanur but I can recommend Crystal Divers, Bali Scuba, Bali Aqua & D Scuba Club (in no particular order), these are all based in Sanur, and can (probably) arrange to collect you from your hotel, but as June is high season, be sure to book your place well in advance.

Agree with Divewench1, water temp is one of the most important aspect. Hopefully we will start freezing soon, not only to get better chances to spot the big fish but also to get better viz ... & hopefully for you temperature will drop sooner next year

Thanks. I could try diving with a large bag of ice or no wetsuit if increases my chances of seeing the Mola?

Hi all - First, full disclosure, I've only dived in Bali once (3 dives on Nusa Penda), in early May. With a moderate swell and strong currents, we could not get around the island to Manta Point, so we first anchored in Crystal Bay. Here, the waves were breaking south (?) of the mooring line. Without low expectations, a Mola² passed us by at about 26m. The water was cool, but not cold. The other two dives were very nice, in particular SD (3rd dive of the day). We liked Bali a lot and will return even in the high season (July?) and perhaps stay on Nusa Lembongan.

Mola Mola have been regularly sighted over the last couple of weeks in here on Lembongan/Penida - the big thermoclines haven't arrived yet but that is what apparently draws them in, hence the "season" from mid June(ish) to October(ish). I'm new here but more experienced folk tell me that in previous years, out-of-season sightings have heralded more sightings over the Mola Season. I'm hoping very much that this will come true for me!

Glad to hear it Following Divewench's advice, I booked a day trip to Nusa Penida with Bali Scuba. It is a 3-dive package and Lisa of Bali Scuba was very helpful. She was realistic of course and made sure that I knew that June was a bit pre-season for Molas but I am willing to take the chance. At the very least, we should get 3 good dives and so it can't be bad.

I saw a few you-tube videos of the Ocean Sunfish. Looks like a gigantic fish-head swimming around. Weird!

I really hope that I get to see and photograph a few of these.

I hope so too, but just in case.............

I never cease to be amazed by these majestic creatures, they are just so prehistoric looking. I even have one tattoo'd on my shoulder :diver:

We have seen a number of them and always at Crystal Bay or Gilis off Candidasa. We also love Manta point and have not failed to see a number of large manta
