Heading to Coz this summer with the whole family.

Before the hurricane I stayed at the Occidental Allegro and was content because I loved the beach there and the pool, and I like sailing the Hobie Cats. Rooms were adequate, food was what you expected at an all inclusive.

Has anyone stayed there in the last year or so? Could you give me a review and tell me what you think? I like all inclusives because I usually don't leave the resort.

Thanks.

Basically the same as before the hurricanes. Even the grounds vegitation has mostly been replanted and made a full comeback. The adjacent jungle is still a bit beat up but that is coming along nicely also. I believe the place is being sold so I suspect it may be going downhill until the new owners go to work. If you don't mind the extra $$, the Grand just down the beach is much nicer. Even the food is actually quite good.

It is now officially sold & under a remodel and the majority of the rooms will be under the control of First Choice in Britain. To date there has been no real announcements as to what it will end up looking like but it is supposed to be called the White Sands Village I think.

Wow, when did that happen?

"British vacation giant, First Choice, is making a major commitment to the Cozumel hotel currently known as the Occidental Allegro.

Company spokesman, Ian Benjafield, yesterday told This is Cozumel that the hotel is being completely refurbished and will be renamed the 'Holiday Village White Sands'.

It will be ready to receive thousands of British vacationers by May 2008.

The resort will continue to be owned and operated by Occidental Hotels, but First Choice will have an exclusive allocation of 207 out of the 259 rooms.

First Choice already operates fortnightly flights direct to the island from Manchester and London Gatwick airports in England. Benjafield said the frequency would be increased to weekly, reflecting the company's intention to up its capacity in Cozumel.

The Holiday Village White Sands will include 40 'Family Suites' with 2 interconnecting bedrooms, plus 35 adult-only 'Royal Suites' - some of which will have jacuzzis - located in a dedicated area right on the beachfront.

"It will also boast four restaurants, six bars, three outdoor swimming pools and a superb approved diving school", added Benjafield."

Unfortunately I can't find the original citation and therefore the date this was announced. When we stayed at the Grand in late November, we stopped in at the Allegro - you could see that they were working on a number of the units.

Thanks for that. It is the only time I have seen it said that Occidental would still be the owner. There have been many messages about all of this, but they all implied an ownership change.

I stayed there last year. The beach was great, but the rooms were bad. They needed to be remodeled. Glad to hear it is happening.

We stayed at the Occidental Grand and loved it. Was not a bad price at all. Get it booked with a travel agent and ask to be signed up to Club Go Go. Thats like a travel agent for travel agents. My wife and I paid $25 per person and it bumped us up to the Royal Club for the week. You get a ROyal Club pool and restraunt as well as a concierge. Food was good and the staff was great. Has all the boats and what not as well. It's actually next to the Allegro. It's solid buildings so no critters getting into the thatched roof.
