This is good news. It's been a while since we've had a administration that looks toward the future and towards reclaiming this planet for our kids - unlike the Bush administration. Also, a change in the International Whaling Commission (which has long kowtowed to Japanese) is in order. A dismantling of this disingenuous organization would help because it has effectively did nothing during the last decade short of convening fruitless meetings at taxpayer expense.

FACT:

President Bush converted more marine acreage into preserves than any man alive.

Now that the messiah has spoken perhaps send a couple of surface attack vessels and sink the SOBs and then we have somebody taking a stance, words are cheap, action talks.

Welcome to this thread Nemrod! Far different than scooters!

Yes. Bush recently protected a far-flung piece of territory out there in the middle of nowhere. That being said it's pretty hard to enforce regulations in an area where no one goes.

While I do share those sentiments regarding sinking the _____B's from time to time - the end game will be all about money. The Japanese have made the IWC a totally kiss-butt organization capable of enforcing nothing by buying off diplomats and letting a very powerful corporation control the end game worldwide.

I have to say that I'm a little shocked that divers wouldn't view this as a good step in the right direction. Change is coming and not just from the new administration. Since "Whale Wars" aired last season there has been an incredible surge of support for Sea Shepherd from all over the world. Check out Facebook - the numbers are astounding! I've been networking with others from all over the world and we are standing up to be counted and our voices are being heard.

The way this adminstration has been lying lately(tax cheat nominations earmarks etc), I fear for the whales

??? Not sure what the parallel here is ? It's a paradigm shift that's taking place.

That being said I like the Bichon avatar.

1. The USCG does patrol these areas. Maybe not as much as we would like but they are definitely working to keep illegal fishing (in particular, tuna long liners) from taking place in this area.

2. Fishing boats did and probably still go there. In particular, tuna long liners fished there previously and some probably still do but no where near as many as would be there if it wasn't a reserve and being patrolled by the USCG.
