Our diving family is new to O'ahu and we are looking for some good shore dive sites. I have a guide book, but one thing I am concerned about is leaving a vehicle unattended while we are in the water. Are there some sites that are considered safe? I understand that no site is completely safe from a break-in, but when discussing a specific site with co-workers, it was strongly recommended that I don't leave an unattended vehicle there. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aloha!

I would say that electric beach is one of the most unsafest dive sites.
Sharks cove is pretty much always busy - makes it a bit safer.

I'm not really a shore diver so I can't say too much, but the rest of the gang will chime in soon.

Don't want to miss inviting you to our Labor day get together on the North Shore ( see Scubaboard Get Together sticky)! Looking forward to seeing you there :D

I have been shore diving exclusivley since arriving here in Feb. I have been to the North Shore, Electric Beach, Makaha and Point Panic in Waikiki. Theft seems to be more likely anywhere on the west side of the island. I'm very careful about what I leave in my truck. If I can't afford to loose it, I take it with me in the water or leave it home. With that said I prefer to dive on the west side of the island. Makaha caverns is always nice.

Aloha~

I understand your concerns about leaving your car un-attended....even paradise has it's problems. Many divers have had their cars broken into.

I have heard of folks paying some of the " obvious locals" a few bucks to watch their car at the west side dive sites. Not sure if it is something you want to try-but thought it would be worth throwing the idea out there.

Enjoy~

Of the places I regularly shore dive at, Electric Beach is the only site that I would hesitate as far as leaving my car unattended. It's gotten worse there in the last couple of years.

I generally don't plan a dive there unless we have someone planning on staying on shore. That's not to say that every time you go there will be a problem - but I'd rather not waste my time driving there and deciding not to dive because you've got people doing illegal activities in the parking lot that particular day.

I've never had a problem on the North Shore - even doing night dives. However, as I'm sure you're aware, you should always take normal precautions. I'm always amazed to see the number of divers with pickups and open top Jeeps that leave their stuff out in the open while they're in the water.

I've never had problems on the North Shore...Sharks Cove & Three Tables. Just remember to lock all valuables in the trunk and don't have anything visible on the seats or floor boards.

This alone is usually a good deterrent for thieves, if they don't see anything to take they move on because they need to move fast, if they have to take time and dig for stuff to steal or break into a car that 'might' have something in it, they would rather move on and find something they could see is worth taking.

Also parking where there are other cars is usually safer than parking your car by it's self, safety in numbers you know. This usually isn't an issue on the N.S., somtimes, especally on weekends, just finding a place to park can be.

have a great trip!
Aloha
