I am going to develop a proposal to a company regarding sponsoring the sinking of the Vandenberg in the Keys as part of the artificial reef program. I would like to be able to tell them how many divers are certified on an annual basis and how many divers there are extant who are certified.

This is an international company, so US and World figures would be very helpful.

Can anyone help?

Ken

rstone,

Is this just PADI or all known certifications, or some other slice. Nice set of numbers BTW, nice format.

Those are the numbers for PADI only. There are many other certification agencies you could add in.

OTOH, the numbers are meaningless when you are trying to discover how many divers exist. Some of those certifications are specialty or advanced certs which mean they do not represent a new diver. Others are recertifications or divers who are already certified with another agency which mean they do not represent a new diver. Many of those folks have stopped diving over the years for various reasons. Some are no longer alive. Some are no longer healthy enough to dive. Some have lost interest.

Yes, over 10 million PADI cards have been issued, I'm sure there are not close to 10 million divers in the world today.

Walter, you are absolutely correct on all counts. These numbers are cards issued. Some divers have a dozen cards yet it's only one diver.
btw, where did you get the numbers?

I sent an e-mail to NAUI HQ and hopefully there will be a response. Trying to help someone get something done certainly seems smarter that standing on the side lined griping about no place to dive...

BTW,
Good luck, mozzel tov, bon chance, buono fortuna

I will follow up with more info as it becomes available...I will also post the results (although not the name of the company)
