I am a rookie diver and I am thinking about doing a dive off the Nubble Point Lighthouse in Maine. My wife and I were there last year in Sept and we saw divers both days we visited the area. We plan on going back in Sept again and I have been thinking about a dive there.

I now have 20 logged dives and by then I should be up to 30 - 35 as I dive a couple times each weekend. Most of my diving is in fairly cold water and with somewhat limited visbility.

What should I know about the dive?

Is there a dive shop nearby that you would recommend for advice and rentals (probably just tanks)?

Are there local divers that I could tag along with or DMs I can hire to guide me? I will not dive alone and especially in a new place.

I have spoken to another diver who did the dive and I would probably stick to the channel. He mentioned some strong currents on the sea side of the island.

I appreciate any info or suggestions.

There is no diving allowed on Sunday's during the tourist months (May-Oct?) so in Sept you will be limited to Saturday, or during the week.

There are two dive shops (that I know of) "near" the Nubble: www.atlanticaquasport.com in Rye, NH and www.portsmouthscuba.com in Portsmouth, NH. I don't know about rentals, call them. Most of my business is done with AA so that's who I would recommend but I am not sure of rentals. Call him and find out.

There are frequently divers there and their experience level for the site varies widely. The most important things to remember: heading due west is guaranteed to find land and depending on where you surface it might be a rather long swim back to the entry point or a rocky climb out of the water.

Watch out for current, boats, slippery rock. Otherwise, it's a great dive. If you are in that area it's "a must".

Depending on when you want to dive I could meet you there and "give you the tour".

Chip, it's a pretty easy dive and one of the best in New England. The left wall inside the island is pretty safe, the left side is also very nice although getting very overgrown with kelp. The closest dive shop is in Portsmouth NH (http://www.portsmouthscuba.com/flash/index2.htm). Now for finding a buddy, your best bet is to show up early on a Saturday, there's always a crowd and if there is a class you can generally hang out with them. They are fun to dive with but they do make you take off your mask, put on your mask, take off you BCD, put on your BCD etc.

Thank you both for your info. It makes me even more eager to make that dive. I may take you up on your offer G.M.

Hey Green! I was up Nubble the other day and saw your Icon / Poster. Whats with that ? Is that poster you work ? What does it mean ? I was the guy diving the doubles. I think I was the only one with doubles that day, so I was easy to spot.

I live in York and dive there all the time, PM me when you are coming and I'll go out with you.

Thanks for the offer. I'll look you up when I get the dates down!

The picture was my idea/concept but done by a artistic cousin. It's what I point to when folks ask "what's a green manelishi?" :D

I saw only one person with doubles so it must have been you. You should have stopped and said "hi".

What I am doing there is selling these:
