I would do the purchase when you can afford it (if that's now then do it now) and have your friend go over it with you. Diving with a BP/W configuration really isn't hard it just takes a little getting used too. Getting it all setup correctly is the key part and is pretty simple.
If you go with a long hose, make sure you get someone to show you how to properly don and doff in and out of the water. More importantly in the water so that you can provide your reg to someone who needs it without getting tangled up.
What I would do before buying anything is see if you can find someone or an LDS that has a setup you can borrow so you can do a few dives with it.
I personally love diving the long hose configuration and BP/W setup. It's very simple and alot less to worry about while diving (for me).
Everything is very streamlined, nothing to get caught and snag on anything or drag on the bottom. You can change and modify it to your hearts content and truely make it what you want. If you want to have 5 d rings on your chest, go for it.
Some people don't like certain things, if that's the case it's best to know what you won't like before you shell out 500 bucks for a BP/W.
