I have twice booked boat dives out of San Diego on different boats (blown out both times) and was asked for AOW. Very likely that it is site dependent as they were supposed to go to the Yukon.

Yeah I thought some boats might for certain sites like Farnsworth but for most sites in So Cal AOW isn't required. I guess I don't count San Diego as So Cal. My bad.
I just saw this on the Bluewater Photo site for a charter they have in June on the Pacifica Star to Farnsworth.
** Advanced Dive Trip: AOW cert required and we recommend you have at least 50 local dives, the top of the pinnacle is at 50ft, and there can be currents**
