Well thanks for the info folks. I really wanted to do Madison it looks very cool. I will stay out of caves and caverns, I know one needs the training first Besides I'm pretty new to diving so even diving in a 5 foot puddle is cool for me now. Im going to add Devils Den to my list. I like the way you go into the cavern then suit up and dive. Looks like a good place for some erie pics.

Can't do Madison without a cavern certification, minimum.

Devils Den is cool, very interesting dive for any level.

Catfish Hotel at Manatee Springs State Park

At Manatee Springs, you can also dive in the head spring. It's not real deep (25'?), and basically a big shallow bowl w/ the spring vent on one side, but lots of fish etc. to see.

Another plus is it's only $10 since its a state park. There are limits on the number of divers allowed. I would suggest calling the park for that info and getting there early if it's a weekend day.

Have fun,

John

It's been mentioned, but Blue Grotto is a good 100 foot dive , a fun spot to skin dive, and a clean location. If you want to dive the grotto, go early, because the first class of open water students will invariably smash into the bottom creating the silt out that Ed so famously tells you not to do in the video.

Ginnie is fun, but like others haven mentioned do not camp there unless you want to hear some trailer trash with a confederate flag tattoo beat his toothless wife at like 4 AM while he's drunk on Bud heavy. I made the mistake of camping there once, and I'll never do it again.

Devil's Den is also nice, there's some decent swim throughs there, and Rowena is a super nice lady. If you like to camp, Devil's Den has a lot of property and stuff attached to it as well. You could also do 40 Fathom Grotto, but I think now you need to pay a guide to lead you around like a tourist, which might kill the fun a little.

A couple of hours away, but Jackson Blue is a PHENOMENAL cavern. Just unbelievably gorgeous. In my opinion it blows Ginnie way out of the water when it comes to a cavern.

Sure is, but it is against the law to go into the cavern without the proper training...never mind stupid! Jackson Blue is a very large cavern and one can easily get disoriented in there. Please don't recommend people go diving in overheads if they aren't trained!

Gunner, the only safe springs for you do dive are Troy, Alexander, Vortex, and Morrison. The other locations mentioned are overhead environments and you should not be going in those without the proper training. Even the Ginnie Ballroom is dangerous. OW divers have died in there! Why not use the first 2 days you're here to get cavern certified? That will provide you with the training you need and will open up a lot more springs for you to safely dive.

true story.
I saw an OW diver almost bite it in there last year

yup, her tank valve was only partially opened, she got down near the bottom, totally freaked, grabbed her buddy's reg out of his mouth, knocked his backup out of the way, and dragged him, with no reg in his mouth out of the cavern to the surface. All of this while Litehedded was trying to offer them his long hose, which they didn't seem to understand. Probably the scariest thing I've seen underwater.

Thanks for the story of a recent occurrence, guys! This is the reason I'm so adamant about warning off non-trained divers from "safe" caverns. One or both of those divers could have died because this girl was not trained in cavern diving and didn't know the proper procedure. Had she been trained, she would have been able to handle the situation without any issues!

I thought the guy was gonna embolize
I was shoving a reg in her face but she just looked at me with big crazy eyes and bolted for the surface
