If I read this correctly, NOAA is purchasing 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets for their 63 Law Enforcement agents for their twice annual target practice.

Of course, at great sacrifice, they did cancel the the $5,000.00 request for a Magician to motivate employees at a leadership training event.

You would think they would feel guilty, but the folks at NOAA laugh about it.

Thats 730 rds ea, if they do a two or three day trng session like gunsite or even a decent pistol, advanced pistol course they can burn 500 rds like nothing.

I say they should buy twice as much, but I'm a gun nut!!!!

Hey, at least Americans get to use the stuff. I just read where the US Air Force is paying Jordan $370 million to train Iraqi aircraft technicians.

I agree. Went through 412 rounds of 147 gr JHP in one day at my last 3 gun comp. Matter of fact, according to my reloading log i shot 1,943 barrel burning rounds of 168-220 gr 300 win mag last year. In my experience very few cops are "gun guys" and people like us have a sick disease that feeds on ear drums and wallets.

While it may seem excessive, that is not a lot of ammunition for officers to burn through; I routinely purchased 10,000 rounds at a time, some times monthly, for our re-qualifications (it is NOT target practice!) and we went through every single round we could.
Semi-annual requalification is useless unless the officers practice on their own; if your life depends on your reactions in an emergency, then you react as you train. More training = better muscle memory = better, more appropriate reactions.
The same theory and practices hold true for diving, I'm guessing one of the reasons that many shops/operators require a refresher if you haven't been in the water for a year or more.

I love my guns and all but isn't NOAA the weather people? Why are the armed in the first place?

That's a good question.

AFAIK, NOAA takes care of weather stations, buoys, radar, maybe satelites and storm forecasting.

I'm not really sure why they're armed at all.

flots.

If they are going to carry firearms in the line of duty, then they damned well better practice using them.

Why a NOAA official would need to carry sounds like a separate question.

... and that's the real question here. What's really going on?

Office of Law Enforcement

Looks like their unit does criminal investigations and patrol regarding marine wildlife violations. Boarding a strange vessel alone at night on open seas to check for criminal violations in an area where drug and human smuggling also occurs....hmmmm.

Yep, a firearm seems pretty reasonable to me !!

and 720 rounds a year per officer for practice and qualification is minimal.

I have no opinion on the Magician....
