I meant "feel" as in not having any big jacket wrapped around you - i imagine that is part of the draw to these plastic backpack. For less than $100 you can get a decent BP/W off ebay....

Nostalgia is the real draw.
Maybe its nostagia for some of you who dove in the "early days of diving", but this part:
In answer to those other questions, in my limited experience i havent seen many and only know of a few divers (nostalgia dives or shallow shore diving - or in Kev's case boat cleaning) who wear those older rigs. BC/wings arent just for newbies (nor are they just for xmas), most people gain a good deal of assistance at depth for wetsuit compression and to adjust a little as their tanks empty. I dont know how new Bober99 is to diving, but its well worth getting your own gear, particularly BC's (and regs) to your liking to make your diving more comfortable.

there is NO comparison. Those things always pinched, even when we were in the water.
We were doing good to afford that! I think my first dive was one inch strap tied to the valve neck and sorta tied to the tank. It didn't work too well, so we looked for something else, and this was all there was!
No bladder, no SPG, no Depth Gauge, no wetsuit, No problem!Diving was merely an act of not dying before you reached the surface.
Yean and Pete only got certified 4 years ago....LOL...just kidding buddy....=)
It was a bit longer than four... but I have been diving for a lot, lot longer than I have been certified.

This gear discribes to a "T" what I started with. i.e. no BC of any type, a blowmolded plastic Back plate with a stainless strap around the tank.
Most often used that setup in warmish (~60 degree) water with no wetsuit. No biggie as how cold do you get burning thru a 72 cuft tank?
If we were using wetsuits we would just wear enough weight to be slightly positive at the surface at the start of the dive.
Swim it down and we were slightly negative. At the end of the dive you'd end up positive at the surface, kinda handy if you had to swim back to the boat
Safety stop? who knew?
The "Historical" folks still dive this way for fun.
