just a quick off topic.... but whats the difference in training between gue's rec1 vs fundies... the only reason i ask is my girlfriend is not even ow yet and thought about just taking rec1 together considering if i read right.. it takes the place of fundies for tec/cave prereqs

Check the website but it does not look like rec1 tekes the place of fundies. Fundies with the tech pass has higher requirements as per the website.

I thought you can get a tech pass from Rec1 also?

if anyone finds out let me know please... considering its the same cost... if the training is the same.. or even more extensive id happily be re-certified for ow :)

Donno, may be the website is lacking the info but it does not mention anything about it. In Fundies description there is a special section with additional requirements for the Tech pass.

Rec 1 assumes that the divers have no previous experience in diving as far as I remember, I do not see how a brand new diver can efficiently manipulate the manifold maintaining the depth and the team formation + manipulating the light after a week of training.

Rec 1 is designed as a single tank/no light class. While there is nothing in standards to prevent it being taught with doubles or a light, there is no process to enable a student to get a tech rating from Rec1. Rec1 is designed to teach someone who has never dived before how to dive. These people are not then ready to go onto Tech or Cave training anyway, so there is no real need to build in the tech rating.

new divers should probably take Rescue, Nitrox, Nav, and Night specialties from PADI/NAUI before or in addition to taking fundies. take CPR and the DAN DEMP courses as well (and DAN BLSpro for bonus points).

Agree, along with AOW. Various charters/shops can have crazy rules and this breadth of certs can come in handy when the charter/shop just wants the darn plastic "proof".

Likewise the only NITROX card I've ever flashed is a UTD one and the card lists 32% on it and I've never been turned down for a fill. I have had someone question the agency but after asking me a few NITROX questions they did the fill. But since GUE-F covers it and you'll be taking it later I'd leave it at that unless there's a pressing need to dive NITROX earlier.

To avoid idiotic situations when a diver with 10 dive is allowed on the boat just because SHe has an AOW and another dive is not alowed because he has only OW card and his 1000 dives do not count.

I wonder how much of that is a regional thing.

I dive actively in CA. I've dived in MX, HI and French Polynesia. I have not taken AOW, and I have never been denied even for dives the op specifically lists as being 'advanced'. And no - I'm not flashing a trimix card or some such thing for punta sur Cozumel. I travel with my PADI basic open water, IANTD nitrox and NAUI advanced scuba rescue cards. I've *never* shown the latter - it's there just in case.

Could be luck of the draw I suppose.
