It's all a bit of a rip-off for nitrox regs!

OK, when you have nitrox you have elevated percentages of O2, and hence an increased risk of some form of accident. For Tanks, it is the presence of oil and hydrocarbons that is the main danger, and if nitrox is done by blending, then there is the possibility that the tank gets exposed to 100% O2. Hence, it is always good to clean a tank.

Now, for the reg, unless you are using funny mixes for deco stops (50% or greater) they are usually exposed to less than 40%. The problem with Regs, at elevated %O2 isn't really oil etc, (although it is wise to make sure that the inside isn't covered in oil) it is the performance of the seals etc. Most seat materials will eventually fail after exposure to high ppO2. Some reg manufacturers (eg APEKS) have regs that in their standard condition are OK for upto 40%.

Having nitrox clean regs is a bit of a gimick to charge extra, and is only worth it, if the ppO2 is going to be reasonably high.

So, if you are buying a decent reg, don't bother with O2 cleaning it. At an annual service you can always have the O2 safe O-rings etc.. fitted.
