How much did they charge you? I was going to sign up for a course but it was like $300 and I thought that was a bit high for a Nitrox class.

Not sure why I'm poking my nose into your SoCal business, but for what it's worth, I think a nitrox class is one class where the quality of your instructor doesn't really matter a whole lot. Everything you need to know is in the book. The class and dive part were just to make sure you understood what you read.

So, I'd go with whoever's cheapest/most convenient. I think I paid like $150 for my nitrox cert in Monterey.

If interested, John Lumb will be teaching a Wreck/ Nitrox Specialty course in the fall (9/29, 9/30, and 10/1) diving aboard the Lois Ann to the Yukon and Rube E. For more info, email him directly at DivrJon@aol.com

It's a great weekend, alot of fun, and diving companionship! Not to mention, John is one of the top instructors around.

I paid $265 - it included book, DVD and free nitrox while I was taking the class. I can get fills up to 40%. I guess that seems expensive, however, I've been using that shop since my OW cert, know the owner really well, and so he takes good care of me in other ways. The ANDI class is $365 - much more intensive but then you can get up to 50%.

I also agree with DOH that quality of instructor doesn't matter as much as other classes. If you can find a class for $150, jump at it. :D

Not to stir the pot, but some instructors think the dives are important in order to practice ox-tox rescue procedures. (Of course, that's only a factor if the class dives actually include ox-tox rescue procedures. I wonder how many local classes do?)

Not sure how often he checks his email, but I emailed him last year when he had his course and never received a reply and then after you posted this I sent an email asking about this class as well. No reply as of yet.

For what its worth...

I can teach PADI Nitrox, TDI nitrox and ANDI Nitrox ( CSU)

There is a tremendous difference between the classes..

PADI nitrox = Nitrox for dummies.. just the minimum to understand the concepts

TDI nitrox a bit more complete, but the materials are not as flashy as the PADI offering..

ANDI CSU - A thoroughly complete class, teaches not only the basics of nitrox, but alot of physiology stuff thats left out by the others.. This program is the equivalent of most agencies nitrox + advanced nitrox classes..
