Whats the big deal with using Nitrox? You breathe it in and you breath it out. Why does it necessitate an additiional cert?:dork2:

Because of the increased O2 levels it has different depth considerations than air; as well there is a greater chance of oxygen toxicity to be brief.

So you don't kill yourself breathing it in and out.

Well put, Constructive Sarcasm is great.

I might add they should teach you about calculating MOD, EAD, O2 exposure, O2 toxicity, how to use O2 analyzer (calibration, function). That's my short list.

Or you could just dive until your computer starts beeping then go up until it stops.

You mean thats not meant to happen? I thought it was a diving alarm clock so you always carried on until it started beeping - sort of underwater egg timer.

Because if you go too deep for the mix you are using, you can suddenly go into convulsions, pass out, and die.

The course teaches you how to calculate which mix to use on which dives, and then what your respective "no decompression limits" will be for each mix.

Because, most dive shops and resorts or bound by agency standards in one way or another. Many of them are contractually bound to follow agency standards because they are agency retail members. In any case, the standards of most agencies require that you only sell breathing gas to a diver who is "certified".

You can go to an industrial gas supplier and buy any gas you want including custom mixes in large quantities. They don't know what you are going to use it for and they don't care.

the course makes you aware of the differencces between air and nitrox . the special considerations that have to be taken when using the gas . it touches on blending and the standards assciated with blending so that you can know what your buying .

the course goes into many areas that you must be aware of before you "simply" breath in and out ......

Different risks, different knowledge, greater complexity in calculation. Also, gear certified for Air is not necessarily usable for Nitrox. You need to take a class... certification?... who cares. Instruction and knowledge, most certainly.
