I'd suggest reading this before diving NITROX-
DIR-diver.com - NITROX Class Part 1

Honestly, it's better information than the PADI/NAUI/SSI material that I've seen.

I think the DIR information pointed to by your link is good information but not better or worse than the information presented within the NAUI NITROX course.

I cannot comment on the PADI or SSI NITROX course content since I never took either course.

TSandM::It's not that I really can't wait to do a single nitrox dive it is that the operator I usually dive with always offers a nitrox dive which is included in the six dives that I usually do with them. Just curious about using the nitrox and any side effects or health problems which would preclude using the mix. I can really get along just fine using compressed air. I've been using it without any problems in one form or the other for 69 years.

As young as you as your are, I can see benefits of diving nitrox. The certification is only a $100.00. With all due respect, if you understood the physics and physiology of Enriched air, you probably wouldn't be asking the question. A "TEST" dive on nitrox is not going to reveal anything for you. It's not like testing a new mask or regulator. While not a medical expert, I would think any medical condition that would prevent one from using ntirox would already have been exposed for ones use of compressed air.

If the op is giving you a mini class with your Nitrox dive then you are getting something moderately useful from the deal. If they are just giving you a tank of Nitrox to use, that provides value to a Nitrox certified diver (nothing wrong with a free tank of Nitrox) but to someone without Nitrox certification, I don't think it's worth bothering. While it's unlikely to hurt you as long as you don't exceed the depth limit, it's also unlikely to gain you anything.

Now if they taught you enough and you used it on just the right dive you might be able to get more bottom time on that dive, but in this situation I don't think that's a good idea. You probably aren't diving a Nitrox computer, and probably aren't going to learn and use the Nitrox tables in this situation, and I wouldn't attempt to use Nitrox to extend a single dive if I didn't know what I was doing myself, since you'd really have no idea of your status.

Hi Garobo, Wow, I hope that you do not have all the medical problems you mentioned, if so I do not think NITROX would make much difference either way!

I teach NITROX in my shop and Give it out on trial dives and so far so good, no problems!

As long as people realize the limits imposed and get trained then there should be no problems!
