Hi Guys,

Has anyone used NiMH rechargable batteries with Sea & Sea strobes? Sea & Sea forbids the use of NiMH for their strobes!!! Do you think it will be ok to use them? I have quite few Sea & Sea Strobes and if I were to use alkaline batteries, it will be chore and extra weight to be checking them in onto the plane.

Thanks
Liang

I have heard that NiMH battery will have the danger of explosion when flooded. Anyone has comment on this?

I want to invest in a set of NiMH battery for my YS60 too!

I know several photogs who are using rechargeable NiMH batteries in S&S strobes with no problems. I think is a CYA thing. Several years ago there was a problem with S&S battery caps sealing. When saltwater came in contact with NiMH batteries, it produced a gas and the battery cap would/could explode from the pressure. The problem was fixed by a re-design and replacement of battery compartment caps for older strobes and new strobes since then haven't had the problem.

So.....if saltwater comes in contact with your batteries you'll have a problem. Chances of that happening are slim and a few basic precautions, like turning the strobe with the battery cap facing down before you open it, will protect you if there is a leak. Alot of us are using NiMH batteries regardless.

Do not take this comment as permission or encouragement to go against manufacturers suggested practices. Do so at your own risk.

Hi Liang,

I've used NiMH for 8 years or so w/ no problems. But like Dee wrote, there is a small risk if the batteries come into contact w/ salt water.

"Use at your own risk" is the message S&S is trying to get across.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Guys,

Thank you!!! I have already used them, but just wanted to be absolutely sure about it.

Cheers
