Looking for a good, inexpensive but rugged lite that my wife and I can use for night snorkeling and that I can use for daytime diving for inspecting ledges and inside sponges and crevices, etcetera.

Like the Pelican light suggestion.

Wondering if the UK SL40 isn't about the same for more.

Any other finds?

You might try the IK Mini-Q40. It's a 6-volt light that puts out pretty good lumination. For shallow snorkeling, it might be all you need. You can also attach it to your mask strap for hands-free use. It would also be great to use as a "nook and cranny" light on day dives.
