I have yet to do any salt-water night diving, but I love doing night dives in lakes. The fish that are so scarce during the day are sleeping and not trying to run away from you. The first night dive that I did hooked me...watching fresh water Tilapia feed, catfish peering out of their holes, and a school of white bass that seemed to use our light beams as a navigational tool to stay in front of us. It was an overwhelming feeling and seems to have left an un-quenchable appatite for night diving inside me. Great post!

One final observation - post dive I noticed I was much more relaxed, zen feeling, than normal. The entire drive home I was just AWAKE with a clear mind and feeling great... it carried over a few days where as normally I'm over the last dive I had and want another one in a day or two, I was savoring this one for some time.
I find this to be true as well, except from the awake part.
When I do night dives (which I have only done a few of) I get more relaxed both gearing up, going down, during the dive and when coming back up. Its just like you shut out everything except what you see with the flashlight. It kicks ***!

I don't know about the relaxed while gearing up - I guess I'm always that way, mostly focused on the tasks and what I visualizing the dive before I do it.

I've been thinking about a night dive all day today..... Venice may be calling my name again soon :)

Mmmmm

Night drift dive in warm clear water, turn off your lights (hell, the moon's out, you hardly need 'em) wait for your eyes to adjust, which takes about a minute.

Then watch the explosions of phosphorescence as the little chaps are bounced off the coral by the current. See it just once and you can never forget it.

Bored with that? Just thrash your hands in front of your race for a minute & create your own tiny, temporary universe. All without the aid of mind-altering substances.

I like night diving. Rum in hot chocolate's nice after, too :)

night dives can ones most memorable dives. especially done on a full moon with clear skies ,one does not need to use the torch. We often get loads of phospher in our waters so with out the torch on, one suit tends to glow in the dark.
advice to those who have not done one yet go dark and exsperience it.

prefer a good botlle of vintage port after a night dive

Rum in hot chocolate sounds dangerous - last time I went surfing in Tai Long Wan (HK reference) things went downhill rapidly when Mr Tanduay and Ms Ovaltine became friends......

oh yeah - im going out for a night dive or two this week haha - try to keep things on topic

Its been cloudy and chilly today - it'd be like doing a night dive if I went out... NAW! Nothing like going out at night :)

Same here. At first, night dives didn't do it for me. After 5 years of diving, I can say that the few dives I remember most as THE BEST took place at night.
