I had heard some great things about Odiorne State Park's Sunken Forest. Took a ride up there last week to do a pre dive review of the site, and come to find out, it's now illegal to dive in Rye, NH. Well, that's the scoop according to the folks at the Seacoast Science Center. Seems the river causes too much of a current. They quoted me a fine of $120.

Does anyone know of any dive sites in NH, besides the Coast Guard station?

I tried to stop in at Atlantic Aquasports, but it seems I'm always wandering around up there on Tuesdays when they're closed.

Thanks!

Interesting, I decided to contact the NH parks department and find out more info on Odiorne State Park's Sunken Forest.
see if what you were told is accurate. I can't believe that they could be serious unless there is grave personal danger exists. I will let you know what I hear back from them.

Thanks. It'll be interesting to hear what you find out. It never occurred to me that the people at the park itself would be wrong, especially since one of them is a diver.

You've got my attention. I'm staying tuned.

It's illegal to dive in Rye? Since when? One thing is for sure that river is not to be taken lightly. Two other dive sites in Rye (on the ocean) are Seal Rock(s) and Pulpit Rock(s) but they are ROCK entry. There used to be diving at the "Great Island Common". I'd call Don @ AA and ask for helpful hints.

I know this is an old topic, but it was never resolved.

The ordinances for the town of Rye are online at http://www.town.rye.nh.us/Ordinances.htm. I searched through them using a search engine, and also did a manual search. I could not find any refference to scuba at all, never mind stating it's illegal. I'm pretty sure this is just a case of someone wanting to keep you out of their playground.

There's a lot of good dives in the piscatqua river, where people dive all the time. I've done a couple off fort stark, off new castle commons, pulpit rock in rye, & seal rocks, also in rye. People dive in these places all the time plus also at/near the coast guard station. No worries!

Try seal rocks, that's not a bad spot but you have good viz.

Call Jay at Portsmouth Scuba (436-4887) and he'll set you straight on what you can do. You can also check his site for a good map with local sites.

Also good spots in Maine, just across the river. Fort Foster, Nubble light, for starters
