I am in the process of looking for a local shop to get certified and been hanging around the board for a couple days now. Seems I'm kinda struggling with some certain things.

Can somebody help me out with some of the terminology and gear used on here? I have figured out a couple things such as BCD and LDS...things along those lines.

Is there a good total newbie thread that can describe some of the terminology used as well as what the certain pieces of dive equipment do?

I have never looking into diving until about 2 days ago and decided it is something I want to do and I hate reading these threads and not knowing what somebody is talking about....i know i know...:dork2:.

thanks in advance

I would suggest finding a couple of local dive shops (lds) around you and going in and talking to them. They can give you information on getting certified, as well as get you used to hearing some of the terms. If you have no idea what a certain terminology means, please ask. We all were learning the terminology at some point when we were also a newbie.

What 2905luvsbubbles said. Dive shops have distinct personalities. Some aren't very friendly, some are. Find the one that melds best with yours.

A combination of a good dive shop that you are comfortable with and some independent study is what it's all about. Becoming dive gear savvy is more difficult than getting certified and the way to get savvy is to read. Nothing is black and white, this is adaptive gear and we and our needs are all unique. For those reasons you will encounter a lot of differing opinions. Reading and sorting through the multitude of threads here on ScubaBoard will give you the chance to understand the logic behind decisions and practices.

Good luck in your pursuit of becoming a diver. It's well worth the effort.

Hi, Matty. This is a great site that someone had posted on this board a while back:

Hope it helps.

Good luck!:)

Use the Search function at the top of the page, and enter the word 'Abbreviations'. There are several good recent threads that may help.

And, be sure to do a search on 'Dork Divers' There is a great set of threads on that topic (and that unofficial but rather large group), which are really quite informative, and enjoyable as well. No, you are not a 'dork' for asking. Asking questions and (hopefully) getting helpful responses and useful information is what SB is all about. We all have to start somewhere.

The other thing, is when you do your OW cert class, the reading materials actually have a lot of this stuff explained. At least my NAUI materials did, I found that a lot of the research I had done on the net was reproduced there (except for the Wikipedia article on how regulators work, that's a must-read!)

The PADI OW book also has quite a lot of information on what all the gear is, how it all works, what to look for when buying it, and how to take care of it.
