I don't recommend Santa Barbara Island to newbies.
You can deal with rough crossing via motion sickness pills. However, if the weather is just not perfect out there, then there will be heavy surge, heavy chops, and high possibility of current. Experienced divers can dive with these water conditions. It can be a bit tough for newbies.
I've been to Santa Barbara about ten times the last six years and I only remembered encountering calm dive sites a whole two times. Not to mention sweet dive sites are off the islands which can be quite treacherous with depth and current.
