Hey all, I just got the diving bug and am getting certified in about 3 weeks, was the first time the class schedule and my schedule worked out. At first I was determined to go through the class then think about buying my own gear, didn't buy the "train with the gear your going to use" bit from the LDS. So anyway, was browsing the internet and found a guy that lives about 30 min from me selling a:

Zeagle Concept II Pro BCD + Octo backup regulator + MKII BC Inflator/alt air source
Genesis Atlas Regulator
Aeris Atmos Pro Dive Computer
Xcel 3/2MM full wet suit
Amara 2MM diving gloves
Micro Pro diving knife
Ikelite PC Lite
Akona Diving deluxe rolling duffel bag

All of this for $700. The LDS packages start at $1999 and frankly that's a bit steep for my budget at this time. I've done a lot of looking on here and the internet in general and all the gear seems good, not worried about the wetsuit or the gloves as I'll probably get new ones, don't like used clothes. Just wanted to know if this is a good deal, or too good to be true. Obviously I'm not buying without seeing in person, the pics look good but they can be deceiving. The sellers says he has all the paperwork showing the inspection/maintaince for the times used, which by the way claims the gear was only used for 10 - 15 dives. Well it sounds like a really good deal just wanted to get some more experienced opinions before I took the plunge. Let me know if I should jump on it, or run away from it.

I own similar gear. $700 is about what I paid for it, new. By the time you get that regulator a correct servicing, you will not have a bargain.

Oh yeah, my duffle bag does not roll.

Welcome to diving.

Try going to the following two sites to get an idea of pricing for the gear if you purchased it new.

Keep in mind that any regulator you buy used you should have serviced before using it. You have to factor that cost into the equation when buying used regulators.

Buy scuba gear, scuba diving and snorkeling equipment, and everything underwater from LeisurePro.com

With the Concept costing around $300 used and the reg and computer at another $300 I guess its not a bad deal. As long what he says is true with the 10-15 dives.
Good luck

IMO, I would take a pass on that one. Also with you not being too concerned with the wetsuit and gloves, then there's the divelight, knife, and duffel bag...sounds like a bunch of filler. I just don't see the benefit outweigh the cost. I'm not saying it's a bad deal, just not a deal to jump at.

well I updated my original post, the starting package at my LDS is $1999, no $199 like I said earlier. I'm thinking about offering a little less for the package without the wetsuit and gloves. How much on average is it to get a regulator serviced, trying to figure that into the cost to see if it's still a deal. Well from everything I've seen the gear is good, not great but good to start with and better then using rental gear. Well I'm waiting on a reply now so going to make the offer when I email him next.
Wish me luck.

Gotta give you the facts. About one person in ten can't clear their ears well enough to be a diver. Then, something like 90% of those who do certify are not diving a year later. Maybe the guy with the "fifteen dive" gear is one of those.

Dive stores want to sell, sell, sell to those who are bitten by the bug, as they know that they may not have a customer a year later. Now may be a good time to learn about diving equipment, and spend later. And... many dive retailers will discount after Summer is over.

buy nothing till you are sure what kind of diving you will be doing you may wind up buying things you never use and things you find you will grow out of very quickly do 25 dives first and try different gear to see what you like and what kind of diving you will be doing

This is my advise also. As you are trying out different things I would suggest you keep an eye on Ebay. Watch what the final prices are and keep them in mind when you are ready to buy. I have purchased almost all of my equipment there. These include two sets of double tanks, Apeks first / second stages, wings, wet & drysuit fins and masks. I have switched to a backpack and harness and did purchase them new because what I wanted doesn't seem to come up for auction. If you aren't in a rush to get the equipment you can save a lot of cash. One word of worning, Also check on the sellers rating, there are a few scam artists out there.

I know a guy round nashville that will sell you an x/s nekton b/c, x/s tri-metal reg, and x/s octo, oceanic three gauge console for 850, including sales tax and putting it together. That's new equipment and leisure pro sells the same for $ 1050.00. I would not buy used gear when you can get new for a little bit more. Also its round 100 to service the regulator and the octo.
