12 yrs old! Great! you'll have a wonderful future in scuba. Don't worry too much about sharks, they attack only familiar things. Most shark attacks are near the beach, when the water is not very clear, the beach goers stir up the sand. The other group usually surfers, they can look like seals on the surface to the sharks.
Keep up the lessons, learn more about the ocean every day and you can impress your friends, and teachers about what you have learned. You also may want to plan a career in biology; archeology; or science, based on what you choose to learn. There's also photography, ecology, etc.
good luck

If you see a shark, let us know so we can all rush up there with our gear to see it. Thats if we dont scare it away.

I took up diving because I am petrified of the water(close call when I was to young to remember, but stuck with me) Once you have a few dives under your belt you will be fine, have a good experence dive buddy you have faith in and alot of the fear will be gone. Some fear is healthy but most of the big critters up here you would be very lucky to see, remember to look not aggervate and things will be fine
Wish I had taken up the sport when I was your age, good luck and sometime you are in the New Hampshire area email me and maybe we can go out to the Isles of Shoals and dive with the seals

Sandwich Town Beach and Hathaway pond are both easy dives.
Sandwich is only about 20' deep, and there is a decent amount of sea life. (no sharks though)
Hathaway is fresh water, and is often used for training dives. There is a sunken boat, lawnmower, and a car. I only did 2 dives there, but saw very little fish.

Welcome to diving. Not much to be afraid of in the way of sharks, etc out there. I dove with sharks in the Bahamas and it was one of the best dives I ever did (not one of the shark tour deals we just ran into them). Sandwich town is a great dive but you tend to get pushed toward the canal (not dangerous you just have some swimming or hiking to do when you are coming back in). Hathaway Pond is a nice easy dive just not much to see. NB I have never been around NB area.

Just remember that nothing you do should be scary.

If anything doesn't feel right, or you think you might not be ready for something, talk to your instructor about attending more pool and/or classroom sessions.

Most instructors want you to be happy and comfortable, and will generally have no problem with you attending additional sessions if you feel they would help.

Your Open Water dives shouldn't be scary, and are just a demonstration of the exact same skills you'll be learning in the pool, so just take your time, relax and have fun!
