The Scubapro MK11/C 300 is a great value and you can get a pink cover.

The XP-10 or the XP-H by Subgear are both excellent inexpensive computers.

The XP-10 comes in a three gauge console.

The XP-H has a digital pressure gauge integrated into it.

Subgear is Scubapro's New exciting line of gear.

The Pro Plus is a really nice unit. Been in the line for years and is very reliable. Nice big numbers and with the compass is a good unit for navigation as far as consoles go.
Oh and big computers make you look really cool if you do decide to go with a wrist unit. :D

As far as regs go before jumping into any one choice decide what type of diving you plan to do. Local or just warm water. Any chance of doing cold water or ice dives. I know you're in Alabama but hey some people get crazy and head north in the winter to dive under the ice.

Thanks for sharing!! I'll keep my eye on it. :o) tehehe.. But I'm already gonna be cool all decked out in pink!!.. My fiance laughs. lol..

Cold water... no thank you!!.. lol. Now if the Titanic was in reach, I'd consider it.. But I don't do too well with cold anything.

I have a Mares Puck (which I wear on my wrist). I bought it because it was cheap ($200). It works well, and has all of the features you'd want as a recreational diver (including a few extras like Nitrox, air temp, water temp, and dive planning). The menus are a little bit weird at first, but I got the hang of it after a 2-3 dives.

You will have to trust that you will not need warranty service on the Puck, because the Mares website makes it absolutely impossible to register the darned thing, and mine didn't come with a warranty card either. So roll the dice.

I'm actually thinking that I'd like to get rid of my console some day, so a computer that can go into a console, on your wrist, or in a holder that clips to your BCD is nice.

My husband has the Suunto Zoop and likes that. You can also put the Zoop into several different holders (console, wrist, standalone).

HTH!

$200 is an awesome deal!.. In my OW and Check out dives we never used computers.. So when I was told I had to have one for some sites, I had no clue what to even begin to look for.

Wow, that would be nice to have options.. I never knew such a thing existed! Thanks for sharing! :o)

If you buy either of them from ScubaToys in Dallas it will come with a full manufacturer's warranty. Scuba Diving Computers Console Units with reviews on sale They're totally legitimate as many here will attest to. I buy from them regularly - they ship fast also.

For regs you should really buy something you can have serviced locally. Otherwise you'll have to send it in somewhere annually. Atomic Aquatics is a good option if you have a nearby dealer - they have a 2 year service interval on all their regulator products. Like ScubaPro they're not inexpensive but every model in their line breathes excellent - and exactly the same - the difference is in the materials used. www.atomicaquatics.com

Another point to consider is that since you're going to need to have the AIR II serviced annually also, it might make sense to buy a ScubaPro reg also so both can be done at the same time/dealer.

Thanks for sharing that site!.. Gah, I've already got my brain on overload. :o) As far as Regs go, I really like the s600 but figured it's too much to spend with me being a newbie diver.. the store my BIl works for really pushes their ScubaPro stuff. I figured it would make most sense to go with a ScubaPro Reg since the BC and Air2 are ScubaPro.. there are just wayyy too many options.

Someone outbid me on an MK11/C300 brand new for like a $1 yesterday I was soo upset with myself.. I had no clue SubGear was by ScubaPro.. I thought it was a knock-off and skipped over it! Thanks for sharing I'll check those out as well.

I'm sooo glad I joined this forum, you are all soo very helpful!

There is a lot of information out there. I would recommend that if you even think you will upgrade at some point, save and buy what you want. It's not worth changing all the time.

I've had great experiences with regulators from Atomic, Mares, Scubapro, and Oceanic. I would definitely look at what your lds can service and what you can find for a reasonable price. Unfortunately Scubapro and sale aren't usually found in the same sentence...

As far as computers go, an Oceanic Veo computer was my first purchase and it still does everything I would ever need it to. I've since added a couple other computers to my collection, but it just goes to show that many of the "basic" starter computers are actually quite good. It's definitely worth thinking about whether you will ever want to wrist mount it though! I started with everything in a console and now everything has moved its way into a wrist mount.... A lot of my friends swear by Suunto and the Zoop definitely seems to be a pretty good moderately priced computer.

Hi there! Where in Alabama is Hayden? I'm a native of Alabama - Gadsden and got transplanted to Charlotte, NC some 30 years ago.

I down a Zeagle Zena with the hot pink panel in front - I wear it around the house to get used to it. I haven't gotten to dive with yet, trying to arrange a dive this weekend.

My husband has a Suunto Gekko and I'm still looking for my wrist computer. So far, I'm using my husband's reg (I just certified mid-June), ScubaPro - it's fine for now since we haven't had a conflict in dive times. I have a Henderson black/pink 5ml wetsuit.

Yes, my gear is pink. Nobody mistakes my stuff for anybody else's. I chose with color and performance in mind. I wear pink for my mom - she died from breast cancer 2 years ago.

This board is terrific!

There is a lot of advice in here. When I taught myself to scuba dive, JFK and Marilyn Monroe were still alive. I have always liked Scubapro bc's, although I have not owned any for some time now. I had one stolen in 1991 that I still can get irate about if I think about it.
I have never owned a Scubapro regulator even when I could them get for below dealer cost. The people who owned them absolutely loved them, but they were also constantly messing with them. I used Oceanic regs for years and years up until they decided not to sell me repair parts anymore.
The regs I use now are some rebranded Italian jobs that just seem to work year after year - that's the first stage part. I use them for deep diving and they're also on my deco bottles. I serviced them a couple of times, but I think that I'll just buy new cheap 1st stages to replace them when I get around to it. I use a Dive Rite second stage now that I probably won't ever service it since it just works fine as it is. I can get the parts for that well enough, and the DiveRite-GearExpress guys are close by down in Pompano if I ever decide to visit them.
The trick to buying scuba gear is to try to buy it once. No matter what you buy, if you don't have to buy two or three of whatever you're gonna use, it's way cheaper. Women are way better at doing informed dive gear purchases than guys since since you're...uh, well, you're all just smarter than us.
Good luck with the diving and pay no attention to anything that I wrote about not servicing my gear every year. It's a good idea if you have someone with measurable intelligence doing the servicing. I did a lot of servicing and repairs so I know when something is going to FUBAR in me. Plus, if it does, it already happened a bunch of times before.

Thanks for the advice!!.. I guess I should really decide on what I want now and in the future.. I also agree with you weitodive, I don't want to buy stuff every couple of years..

Hayden is between Birmingham and Cullman.. It's very country to say the least.. All we have within 10 miles or so is a Dollar General and a couple gas stations.. lol, sad I know.. Next year I will be moving to the Atlanta, GA area.. It's more my style.. lol

I almost got the Zeagle Zena, super cute and very comfy!!.. Let me know how your dive goes. My fiance read many reviews on it with people raving over it. Apparently you can swap out any piece you could ever need to on it if you get bigger or smaller or just want new items. That's a huge plus!

Yall are giving me way too many types of computers to look in to.. lol... I really appreciate it though!..

Would love to see a pic of your gear!! :o) I too don't want to skimp on performance for color.. I want the best of both worlds. :o)

Sorry very sorry to hear about your mom. My mom was also diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago but luckily survived it.. I believe it was then when I realized how big of a concern breast cancer truly was and my love for pink excelled . And I love how almost every time I buy something pink, a portion goes to breast cancer awareness. :o)
