h3 - hello (again) - I'd agree with Valwood...We did Poor Knights & were very pleased with Dive Tutukaka. Crew were safe, professional and cool. The diving was sub-tropical (nothing like GBR/OZ). We had 7mm - Temps were 59-61F - Vis was about 30+ feet on our dives. LOADs of Rays!
There are beautiful white sandy beaches (Coromandel for example) but it's still cool during the summer.
We had whales (false killer whales) & Dolphins 'escorting' us on on the way out & back, which we were told, was somewhat normal - and was kinda cool.
Highly recommended dive site & Operator. Didn't get a chance to dive elsewhere in NZ. Fav is still in the other reply! :)

I would highly reccomend going to the Poor Knights to dive, it was the best diving i have ever done anywhere in the world. Tutukata is about a two hour drive north of Auckland, you can get a bus to Whangeri, and stay in a backpackers there, and then get picked up for the days diving by Dive Tutukata who take you to Tutukata itself (the only accomidation i was aware of in Tutukata was a pricey hotel.)

Dive Tutukata are a great operation, they have nice boats, and are very effeciant and friendly. What i really liked about it, was that there was no "herding" of divers around dive sites like sheep by the dive guides (like the Red Sea.) They paired people off with similar experience, took you to the site, gave you a good briefing, and then let you conduct your own dive as you wanted to. However, if you wanted to be led they would lead you.

The diving itself was amazing, the under water topography was amazing at Poor Knights, steep walls, caves, archways, loads of marine life. You can also dive two wrecks which have been deliberately sunk off Tutukata, which are great. They are great for penetration, with safe easy access to the wrecks, just amazing.

Have a great time!

thanks for all the info and advice guys, I'll definitely do a lot of diving while I'm there... I'll be there for 1 year! I'm looking forward to the whales and dolphins especially.
