Diver drowns at Waihi Beach - Bay of Plenty Times - Bay of Plenty Times News
A man is believed to have drowned while diving at Waihi Beach.
The 66-year-old Auckland man was diving about 10 to 15m off shore at Shelley Bay on Saturday morning.
Waihi police Sergeant Aaron Fraser said the man was diving with family when he got into difficulties.
Family members dragged the man to shore and attempted CPR as emergency services were called.
St John ambulance staff also attempted to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.
A post mortem examination is expected to take place today or tomorrow.
The man's name will not be released until all next of kin have been informed.
The exact cause of the man's death remains unclear.
The matter is now with the coroner.
Tim Watts from Waihi Beach Coastguard said he was unable to comment.
