Will definitely contact you in the event that I do return. Maybe I can get some pointers from the pro too!! :winky:

If ever you come down Brisbane, feel free to look me up as well...know a few "kang-tows" for good and inexpensive diving here.

Tony

I know it is an up hill struggle but with pictures like these you have won this battle at least!

Hi Tony,

Would really love to meet you in person at your slide show on 2 March at Kinokuniya.... Alas! I may be going for a dive trip at Sudong :p ...anyway, I'll definitely pop by if the trip is cancelled.

Hi Liang,

I'm veri veri new into u/w photography and all the terms that you folks used are foreign to me. I can do some "point-and-shoot" stuff and unfortunately, that's much I can do for the time being. Armed with an ikelite housing + ikelite AquaSnap camera, I tried my hands with this "point-and-shoot" camera in Hantu. After viewing the results, I'm sure I want to buy a proper housing + camera 'cuz it's really a pity when all the pretty nudibranchs and flatworms were all blurry (well, what can you can expect leh?)

So guys, after reading Tony's advice ....I have two cameras in mind - Nikon F80 + (ikelite?) housing, and Coolpix 5000 (housing not available yet). So, I still can't decided between a digital and SLR.... Liang, do you know if Sea&Sea has a housing for F80? How's the Sea&Sea housing for your F90X - easy to handle??

And Liang, you're right...it's really hard to find another diver who shares an interest in u/w photography in Singapore....I guess the common belief is that diving is expensive and u/w photography is a even bigger investment.

Great to know that there's another u/w shutterbug out there in Singapore! And Tony, I'll see if I can get that husband of mine to buy me your book as a Valentine's gift.....

Cheers!

Hi Doraemon,

Yup, Sea&Sea has a housing for F80, quite a nice one actually. It's all black, an unusual colour for a housing.

I am not into digital, so can't give you any advise on that.

I know a little on SLR, F80 is a pretty good camera to bring into the water, cheap enough if it floods (of course I am comparing it to all the other Nikon SLR in the market) Before you go into housing, bear in mind that it is a huge investment (at least it is to me).

Pre-requisite is that you have to know a bit on basic photography like exposure (aperture, shutter speed and ASA). Flash photography is key to uw photography. I suggest you do some reading. Of course, the best way to learn is to make a lot of mistakes in the water. Like me, I have wasted many rolls during my first couple of attempt. Not a single pix in Layang Layang swimming with hundreds of Hammerheads : (. Still..... However, once you get it, I must say it is very very rewarding.

I am quite happy with my Sea&Sea N90Z, quite easy to handle. Sea&Sea is a logical choice as you can get it repair or service easily in Singapore by Andrew Yeo. You have to get it from him though. Anyway, he is the only one who sells it in Singapore.

Btw, Andrew has a 2nd Hand Nexus to sell (in mint condition).

1) Nexus F90 Housing
2) 16mm and 105mm dome and port
3) 2 x YS120 strobe
4) 2 x Ultra light strobe arm
5) Other accessories

Canera and lens not included.

All 5 items for S$5000. This setup is all you need for the start. You can get most of the pictures you see in any good uw photography books. He used to sell Nexus, so he can service it for you as well.

For myself, the only housing I would consider other than Sea&Sea are Nexus or Seacam.

Let's meet up on 2nd March during Tony's slide show. You can email me at yew-liang.cheng@nokia.com

Nice to meet you.

Hi Doraemon,

Hope to see you at the slide show. Will be happy to talk you through the basic considerations for investing in an u/w camera system. Otherwise, I will be at ADEX on April 19-21 at the Sportdiving magazine booth. I think this year the dive show will be either at Suntec or the World Trade Center.

Hi Liang,

Look forward to meeting you on 2 March.

Heading out to the Japanese dive show later this week to see the gang at Nexus, Sea & Sea, etc

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony & Liang,

I would love to talk to both of you so that I can run through the considerations. Alas, I am too impatient to wait for a housing for the Coolpix 5000 and I personally prefer a SLR so I bought the F80 last weekend :D . The dive season is starting soon .......and my hands are itching...

I thought it was a good buy - body + 28-80mm lens, SB-22 flash, camera bag + vest - all for $888. Of course, the macro lens costs more than all these stuff :( I'll learn to use the camera first before investing in the other accessories. Well, in the mean while, I'm still using the ikelite AquaSnap camera with my primary light backing up as a strobe! Not too bad for a point-and-click camera - although the framer and vignetting can be seen in the photos.

I got mixed up with the dates! Yes! I can go to Tony's slide show on 2 March and am looking forward to meet you guys.

Are you guys attending the Celebrate the Sea dinner??

Cheers!

Doraemon,

Congratulations on buying your first SLR! I'm sure you'll enjoy using the camera and look forward to hearing about your progress! Will be wonderful to see you and chat more on 2 March.

Ari,

Thanks very much! The web is a great technology, enabling us to share images and thoughts over so many miles.

Cheers

Tony

Liang,

Good to meet you briefly at the slide show. I was hoping you were going to stay around afterward to chat about photography. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the show, and catch up with you sometime later

Cheers

Tony
