If you get a chance, dive with an experienced photographer. Not only can you be a spotter for them but you'll also have a chance to see how they find and shoot different subjects.
 
I'd second the disposables, though watch the max depth. If you're going deeper, when I started diving, my buddy bought a little point and shoot for less than 100 bucks and got some good pix out of it, particularly of a playful harbor seal.

You're not going to get National Geographic stuff, but if you add it once you're comfortable with everything else, it doesn't add much to your task loading, and you can get some cool "hey, underwater is cool!" shots.
