Hello Divers,
My name is David and I am currently residing in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. I am heading to the first meeting for scuba diving. If you can give me any tips from your knowledge when you first started. I will appreciate it as for what not to purchase and what is good to have and so on. I thought this hobby would be a great way of freeing my mind.

Bye for now,

David

David,
as a newly certified diver myself, I think the best advice is to be patient, pay attention to your instructors, and have fun!
I was very fortunate to have been able to go to the Bahamas to get certified, and from what I've read here, the crytal clear water certainly helps; my (non-diving) wife could see shark shadows @ 100ft from the boat.
As with any class, another factor to consider is how comfortable you are with you instructors, but this is especially important in the water - if you're not comfortable with them, then you won't have fun, and that is what this is all about!
My wife is insisting that we return there (Grand Bahamas Scuba - Meet Fred Riger) for my daughters to learn, and for someone who doesn't like to get wet, that says alot for her confidence in Fred, and especially in Melinda. So guess where I'm going in June???

Welcome to Scubaboard David! Relax and enjoy your class. There is lots of info here on Scubaboard, so take your time, and don't let it overwhelm you. The more you read, the more specific your questions will be and folks will be able to give better advise. A great place to start is in these two forums: New Divers and Those Considering Diving - ScubaBoard
Basic Scuba Discussions - ScubaBoard

You can keep up on local Florida happenings and meet more dive pals here: Florida Conch Divers - ScubaBoard
I have to say, I've met many Scubaboarders here in Florida and we always have a blast.

Check out this annual get-together near you at Ginnie Springs, Megadive April1-3 where everyone of all levels is welcome to join in:
