Hi I am Sue and I have been diving for 8 years with over 400 dives. I now have more time available to travel and dive and am looking for dive buddies. I have a flexible schedule and am currently preferring liveaboards because of Covid but I am open to all diving areas with warm water. Would love to meet someone who wants to go to the Maldives. I am currently researching a trip to Saba. Has anyone been and can give me details about conditions? I have done a fair amount of diving in the Pacific so know about currents but I hear that Saba can have some strong currents which I think is unusual for the Carribean. Anyway, thanks for your replies.

Welcome Sue, Looking forward to hear about your diving adventures :)

Welcome Sue

Welcome. I haven't been to Saba or the Maldives. Saba is known for pinnacle diving, lushly forested (and steep) topside, and a harrowing plane landing experience, IIRC from others' reports. The Caribbean Explorer II that moves between St. Maarten, St. Kitts and Saba (only dives at the latter two islands) is the live-aboard option. Saba has land-based dive operators, too.

Richard.

Welcome

We love everything about Saba. We've been 3 times since 2014. The first two trips were standard week long dive vacations. The third trip was for 7 weeks in Jan/Feb 2021 working remotely during Covid. We've taken two dive trips a year all over the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Florida Keys in the past 9 years. We thoroughly enjoyed all of them but Saba is the only place we've been to more than once. It really is a special place that we love for everything it is and everything it isn't.

If you're looking for beaches, big resorts, casinos, endless buffets, exciting nightlife, or things like that then you should look elsewhere. If you're looking for great diving, incredible hiking, beautiful landscapes, and the feel of a quaint Dutch town then Saba is the place to go.

The diving is awesome with sites ranging from reef dives starting at 40ish feet to sites on their pinnacles that top out at 80' and go down far below recreational limits.

Above the water is just as incredible as below. There really is almost no flat land on the island. Everything is built into the side of the mountain and every spot has a great view. Besides diving, the next biggest activity on the island is hiking. I'm 6-1 and am significantly over 250lbs now. The last thing you see when you look at me is a hiker. However, even I have made several of the most iconic hikes on the island. There are a couple from the trailhead in the main town of Windwardside that are fairly short (30 minutes one way) and have incredible views.

Sea Saba is the dive operator I'll point you to. They really provide a concierge experience. The dive crew are attentive but not smothering once they check out your dive skills. The staff at the dive shop will handle everything on the island. They'll recommend hikes based on timing and weather. Recommend restaurants as well as make reservations for you. They arrange transportation for diving as well as anywhere else on the island you want to go. I'd recommend staying close to Windwardside when you go. Everything you want or need is within walking distance even though everywhere you go is going to be up hill ... both directions.

Sea Saba does have new owners in the past year. Everything I've seen from social media and heard from people that have dealt with them has been positive. It sounds like they are following the same tradition of top notch customer service that the previous owners practiced for 30ish years.

Welcome, make sure you get good pictures to share.
